pulled this engine out of a 64 parklane marauder. im the second owner on it and was told that the original 390 pi that was in it was replaced with this engine. when i started cleaning it up was when the fun started. all the parts on it are 64 and before. it has a reg 390 bore but the stroke on it is 3.98. the oil galleries are a lil puzzling... look like they have freeze plugs in them, and i've never seen valve covers with the 390 super marauder sticker. all i can find out on other sites is that merc did make a super marauder engine but cant find any details on them. has anyone seen anything like this?
Mercury 390 ci engines have a stroke of 3.78" and bore of 4.0468". The 427 ci Super Marauder engines have a stroke of 3.78" and bore of 4.2328". The 3.98" stroke you list is not factory and would make this engine a 409 CI engine.
the 410 had a 3.98 stroke... was basically a 390 with a 428 crank. dont know if this was possible that early though.
It was common, back in the day, to add a 3.98 crank and pistons to match. We have many more options now with cheap aftermarket cranks. I would bet the crank and pistons are later than '64. Look for #s on the crank and post them. Plugs in the oil galley are common too.
the sticker on the valve covers is not anything special. alot of 64s had them. i know mine did. the sticker can also be bought through macs antique auto parts for around ten bucks. anywho, just my two cents
What he said. I had them in both my Mercs. Basically the 300 hp Z code 4 barrel 390 was called a Super Marauder, It was the base motor for the Park Lane and was optional on lesser models, it was just a marketing name. The 335 HP 390 and mighty 427 was called the same too. It stilled hauled *** pretty good however.
unfortunately the parklane body was sold shortly after i got the engine and the person that got it ended up selling it to a crush yard so i have no idea what the vin code was (blame the stupidity of youth for not realizing how important it was at the time) am tearing into the engine and the crank numbers are as follows... first weight from front C4AE-B second weight from front 11 on one side 12 on the other last weight from front has fomoco imprint and the letter Q
The 410 came out in the '65 model year, so it's perfectly possible to have a 410 with '64 date coded parts. And, as noted, 390s were called "Marauder" or "Super Marauder" throughout the 60s. My '68 was the only year during the decade that a Marauder model Mercury was unavailable, but the engines were still called "Marauder" and "Super Marauder" in '68. I would say, based on what you are telling us, that you have a '65 410. Not a bad engine - in fact a pretty damn good one - but not super rare either.
that would fit with what i know about the car and engine. i know im second owner on it. my dad went to school with the guy that had it and has known him for years. would also fit with the pi being replaced with something "comparable" to it at the dealership. know the lengths but have been told alot that there is no way it can have that stroke length being that it was a 64 even to the point of them measuring it wrong to prove that they are right! talk about frustrating!
All I'm going to say is that I figure Trooper Roy Beal's big Merc M. Interceptor couldn't keep up with my -151 cammed 'new 67 SS/RS Camaro back then as I told him so as he was writing me a ticket that cost me a month of no driving. I flat told him that I had enough of all the local Law Dogs pulling in behind me back then because he couldn't catch me that early Sunday morning high speed run I did at 145 mph between Moberly and Macon, MO to get to my old RR car pool back then with him on a tripod radar watch..... I flat told Roy that if he ever pulled in behind me again, that I would head for the country roads and that he was flat going to have to catch me. AND he dropped off me like a turned off light-bulb and NOBODY ever pulled in behind me after our little talk! Later, I bought a '63 Merc Meteor off him fine and even then later he used the MoSHP computer to find who owned my '67 Camaro car that I ended up buying back. Roy was just like "Dirty Harry" BUT he was fair to a fault, great Trooper by me......... pdq67
lol couldnt be that the only way u got away was because ur car weighed approximately half the weight of the merc he was driving lol sorry couldnt resist
You might be lucky that Officer Beal wasn't driving one of the new police optioned 440 powered Fury IIIs like the Texas Highway Patrol was running back then. They suprised a LOT of folks that thought they had fast automobiles. (G) Larry T
Incorrect. The FE 410 was for Mercury in '66 and '67 only. Not to be confused with the 410 MEL which was used in '58 only. You are correct about the date codes. They refer to the year that the tool or mold was made, not when the parts were cast. That is why you never see FE heads with a date code later the D2 (1972) even though they produced FE's upto 1976. It is entirely possible to have a '66 or '67 engine with all '64 or earlier date codes. The others are correct. The FE Merc 410 is just a 390 block with a 428 crank and special pistons. This was a very common swap / power upgrade before **** started making cheap stroker cranks. The Merc FE 410's were rated at 330 hp, 445 lb-ft of torque with a 4 barrel and 10.5:1 compression.
so basically i do have a 410 even though they didnt come out in production til 66. what i know about this engine was it replaced the pi while the car was still under warranty at the dealer. would that have possibly been one of the crate engines that ford used to send out to be tested or is it more likely that it was a dealer built?
Still not correct. You have casting #s and date codes mixed together. The D2 reference would be for a casting # and can be used for many years. Date codes, such as 4e10, will have what looks like a screw head at each end and will tell when it was made.
Just remember if you proceed with building this engine that 410 Merc engines are externally balanced due to the 428 crank and require an externally balanced flywheel or flexplate.
Heres some good info http://www.mercurystuff.com/#1964 I felt puzzled same as you when I first saw the Super Marauder sticker on mine. Also made a 427 Super marauder
Quite right, you got me on that one. I got messed up when I saw the casting number referenced in post #7.
i know what the date codes look like but i cant find one on the crank... havent completely torn it out yet though. *^.^* i know that the c4ae-b is the casting part number. but dont know what the the 11 and 12 on the second weight is?? and any ideas on what the q would be? got the crank out... theres no other numbers on it. posted pics on my album
yes thats kinda why i was wondering what it was for sure because i knew the regular 390s were internally balanced. seems ive confused more than just me though lol
