Im thinking about dropping a 383 pushing around 405 hp and a 700r4 trans in my 49 poncho, I was going to use a 4x4 s 10 rear end but was told it wont hold up to the 400 hp? any suggestions?
The most common rear axle for high performance is the old 9" Ford. There are an amazing amount of aftermarket upgrades available. Different ratios, posi, alloy axles, brakes and so on. Check with Currie and other suppliers.
try the s10 rear end you have alot less weght to deal with it might just spin instead of break if you toast it then go bigger and badder
Well, no, they weigh about the same if the car doesn't weigh more, and the Pontiac has more weight over the rear wheels than the pickup did. The same rearends that fit 49-54 Chevrolets also fit these cars as bolt-ins or close to it - a second-gen Camaro 10-bolt might be one to consider. Are you going to go out and pound on it or drag race the car, or just cruise with it?
As far as I know, the 4x4 S-10 rears are 8.5" ring gear ten bolts, plenty strong for what you are describing.
I might race it for fun but not all the time, definitly more of a cruiser/ driver then anything, probably do some fun burnouts once in awhile. honestly i'm just putting the power into it for the option to really get up and go when i want. I am bagging it though so I want to make sure whatever I put in it will hold up due to the welding of brackets that need to be done on the rearend itself for the bag system.
