Neat roadster. AJofHollywood. Good detective work!
I must be getting soft. Starting to like 'em with overhead valve motors more and more.

Sorry dont know any of the history. Rudy bought the body from Sammy, built it then sold it. The car has had a couple of different owners. It was at my shop, I built the headers and did some other misc. stuff to it.

Just because the car has a molded cowl, door, and flared hinges doesn't mean it was a lakes car. People did those things all over the country just for looks. I would think if it was a real lakes racer the top cowl bar and post stubs would have also been removed. Plus there probably wouldn't have been a 40 dash in it.

  5. It is nice to see how the story is opening up on this one. Looking forward to hearing what you find out from Rudy.

  6. The guy who owned it, Ed ?, came a few times to the local gathering in Yorba Linda...I'm pretty sure he lived in Fullerton....he told me Rudy built it....Bad Bob might know more.....

It might have been a Bonneville car after a stint as a street car, but the custom modifications (especially the '40 dash) strongly say "street-driven." But even by the mid-50s, guys were trading their street roadsters for late-model cars as they got married and had families, so, as Don Montgomery points out, many former hot rods wound up as either drag or dry lakes/Bonneville cars. But my guess is that its first life after "stock" was street-driven, probably in the late 40's, early '50s.

Whether it's a old or new build it was a great trade. I'd give my nut for that thing.

I love all the small details and as much as I am a fan of the Chevy V8 engine that thing really does deserve a warmed over 59ab Flathead or perhaps a Cad V8....but by all means drive the shit out of it for a long long while.

    Congrats dude.

    Chris you're gay.

Nice, ya done good. So how much lacquer thinner, and how much beer did it take to strip?

  12. About a gallon of thiner, a half rack of PBR and a half rack of Game Day Ice! Seriously, we had to drink some sh!tty beer called Game Day Ice. I think that's the last time Tyler will let John and Jeff go by beer. :D

Yep. Jeff and I just made up. He took me on a 4 hour wild goose chase today for a car that I'm not sure existed. It think we're even.

Here's a pic as requested of the front so you can see that axle better. I've never seen an axle like this. Any body have any idea? And yes, the chrome elec. fan is going bye bye.

  20. I believe that is a Bell axle. Steve Denish at Limeworks had one and recently sold it. He may know something about them. Super cool axle!

Chris: The axle is in fact a Bell Auto Parts axle dating back to the early 50;s. I sold one just like it to Don Orosco and it presently resides under his Model 40 3 window. They are rarely seen up here in Washington State, kinda like you hardly ever see a Okie Adams axle. See ya at Monroe Saturday am. Terry

Update: Talked to Rudy a little over a week ago at GNRS and he said that he didn't know much about the history. He did, however, tell me that the car has been on that frame for a long time. Also, the hole where he stuck the flip-top gas cap was originally an opening for a water tank. I guess lakes cars that were over a certain mph had water tanks for weight? I didn't know that. He confirmed that at one point it had a hood painted like an American flag with numbers.

So, ttt, anyone know anything more about this thing?

I guess I didn't exactly buy it. I traded the '54 for it.

  28. Hell Ryan I don't even like roadsters and I'd like to have that one.

it looks like one that was in Hot Rods barn find issue about last year sometime. It could be a real nice rescued trad car with a little work.

Very nice find and I'm glad it wound up with some guys that will bring it back to life in a manner with respect to it's history. However convoluted.

  30. That is one cool lil car. And I am sure it'll get some improvements for sure to make it more period. All the body details are killer.
