Tail Light suggestions for Hiboy 30-31 Roadster

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by junkmanjr, Oct 5, 2010.

  1. Got a dilema here guys please voice your opinions maybe I can make up my mind then. First off I'm building a 30-31 A roadster with no fenders........so the tail lights are going in the back panel probably. I looked into the 39 Zephyr copies but nothing but LED (too streetrod) so the other choices seem to be 50 Pontiacs or 39 Fords.........but like we've never seen that before. Anyway I want something different I guess, but thats out of the question by now probably. Give your thoughts on what to run or suggestions on maybe a different light thanks............later.

There's a reason that '39 Ford & early '50s Pontiac tail-lights were/are used on Model A & Deuce Hiboys ... they're simply the best looking lamps to mount on the back panel.

That said, the '47-'48 Buick tail-lights on the B*** Model A Coupe look pretty darn cool:

37's are plain and small if you loose the housing and just use the lense and ring.

46-48 Plymouth or Corvair rounds, possibly 59 Catalina, 63 Chryslers-sunk in....

Lots of lights that will work just have to imagine a little and stay true to the era.

    Stay cool!!!

I always liked the '39 ford, (what I have on my roadster) and '50 Pontiac, (what I had on my coupe) until I got to looking up the line on a caravan and realized that that was about all I could see. I'm putting '48 Chevy's on my 3w and though far from being uncommon, I like the look.

I ran 47 Chev tails on my '30 roadster, yes they are fairly common, but they emphasized the lines of the back panel better than did '39 Fords

I used 41 Pontiacs on my 29. You don't see them all that often

I like the '50 Pontiacs and the '47 Chevys. The '39 Fords look great but they're on so many cars......

Here's a shot of my '31 highboy. The lights are '32 Ford and they are mounted on Model A station wagaon brackets.

I'm using 40 chevy lights on the back panel of my 34 ford coupe. The lenses have a bevel that matches the angle of the back panel when mounted sideways.
Nothing wrong with 41-48 chevy lights either. The bezels are a little more complicated with the painted stripes on either end.
Another interesting light is the late 40s/early 50s Hudsons...the cheaper models have small llights and the bigger models have a light that'd prolly be a bit big for an A-bone.

I have a set of original 39' Zephyr tail light ***emblies if you are interested, but I also love 51' Hudson Hornet tail lights (pictured below) which is what I'll be running on the 31' Model A. They seem to pretty hard to find as well...

  27. I agree on the 40s. Used them on my last car. Have another set on the shelf.

It's my opinion that this is the start of most ugly modifications or accessories.

Not that you can't be outside of the majority and look good, traditional etc. But to make a decision for this reason with an "I guess" thrown on top leaves it wide open.
