Hey yall, whats happenin. Up here in college. I just built a new motor for my 76 elky. late model 350 4blt bored 30 over, dart iron eagal heads, biggest comp cam I can use with my stall, etc. Anywho I replaced the old shitty headers with a set of headman headers that fit closer to my body then the old ones. Which is good cause i had to replace the old ones cause i smashed em. Thing is the crossmember I have is for a single exhuast car. Only one hump, I need one from a factory dual car. I think 74-77 elky, or malib/chevelle, will work. If anyone has one let me know cause I gotta throw some pipes on this thing so I can break the motor in. Let me know, thanks alot, spudz.

Would this be considered a traditional rod or custom?
Perhaps you could try posting in the classifieds as a WTB, if they'll let you.

Dude I don't care, I like trad cars, and have several trad projects. And if this post makes such a big deal then I hope I get kicked off.

Great news. I knew I recalled the name but couldn't remember why. Great news anyway...

I had the same problem on a later model GM car, I took it to a guy that C-notched the hump into place with an old piece of 3" pipe that he had lying around. If I had a welder at the time, I would have done it myself. You may want to make some kind of jig (bolt all of the bolts to a table or something) so that you keep the geometry of the piece and then weld in the C from the pipe.

I went back and reread that and it is a little sketchy...I think it was larger than 3" now that I think about it, maybe 4" and it wasn't just exhaust pipe, it was some heavy duty drain pipe or something, probably 1/4" to 3/8" thick.

  9. Hey Spudz, good to hear you are still at school (keep it up!!) and your Mom is doing good. For those newbies that don't know, Spudz used to be the youngest guy on here, what were you like 14 or 15 when you started here? His Mom had a terrible car accident and almost died, but has recovered beyond all the doctor's ideas.

I have to wonder if there is even such a thing as a dual exhaust 74-77 car? I think you may have to fab your single crossmember to make the dual clearance as suggested.

I would maybe check on like a chevelle or malibu web site?? seems those guys build those later model malibus quite a bit and hot rod them, they may know what the trick is...hot rod and car craft seemed to feature alot of those later '70s cars for awhile...

Look for a monte crossmember, thats what I use in my 77 elky...they were more plentiful and fit right in...earlier is better, 73 and up will fit, some small block and all big block cars came with them. Also I think crossmembers.com has one as well but will cost ya more then the junkyard.

Cool I will try to find a monte in the bone yards. Thanx. yeah I USED to be the youngest. I was the youngest for the longest. I was either late 12 or early 13 when I started on here. I wasn't close to even havin a permit I know that much. Newho, I'm 19 now in college. I still love this place just not enough time to play anymore. sucks...

Deyo...it was probably some oilfield/plumbing SCH40 mild steel pipe. Comes in -45, & -90degree bends also...easy to make a crossmember that will hold the weight/abuse.

    They have SCH40, "XX" (aka SCH80), and "XXX"(aka SCH160)

("SCH" stands for SCHEDULE or thickness)

The Fergusons' chain of plumbing/hardware stores always carries a good selection. www.ferguson.com

We used to notch the cross member and put in a section of pipe or even and old starter housing. Just got to use your imagination and what ever you have laying at your feet :)

Glad to hear Mom's doing well Spudz.

Jegs makes a nice one, I'm not sure on the price but we just put one in my brothers 78 malibu wagon and it worked out nice. I think another company makes one too and it's also in the Jegs catalog, but its more expensive.
