i need alittle info please. i'd like to put a v8 ford flathead in my 29 ford roadster that now has a stock 4cyl,3 speed and torque tube rear end. does someone makes motor mounts and do i need an adapter kit (like johnny cash) to mate the v8 with the 29 3 speed? thanks....

  2. Forget using the '29 3 speed. It is not strong enough, non syncro, and you would need to have a special adapter made ($$$). There is no standard adapter available since it is such a bad idea no one does it. Depending upon the year of the flathead you will probably end up using a '32 to '39 V8 trans. What year flathead are you going to use or is that another question you should post? Any thoughts about using speed equipment on the 4 banger?

Hello there I have one just like yours. you can install a Flathead. I am using a t5 with a open rear drive shaft. There is the closed drive shaft transmission that will adapt to the a torque tube. Tight fit though. You probably will have to change the fire wall to clear the fuel pump on the back of the block. Or change to a elect fuel pump. The Flathead radiator is a little hard on the pocket book. I changed my 29 cooler to a Flathead myself. My uncle owned a radiator shop when I was a little boy.I changed my A over to a B myself. So far so good. Others said it would not work. It do! I would change to a later model rear end if you wonted to convert to juice brakes.Change the front spindles and adapt to juice brakes. The A brakes will stop the car if they are in good condition. how ever you will have to keep them adjusted. and in good repair. and give yourself a little more stopping time. (don"t tailgate)LOL. I wish you luck! I have 3 A29 roadster 52 flathead, a 24 T 49 flathead, T bucket fiberglass 37 flathead. And other running and not running engines.

hi charlie, thanks for the reply. actually i'd rather use the 4cyl but i don't know anything about them or what's good speed equiptment for the street. the 29 is going to be a fenderless hi-boy and nothing fancy. just a good down to earth "jalopy"

Hello Joee, on my AV 8 did I use a 255 cui french flathead with bellhousing similar to the 59ab engine, its fits right on a -39 gearbox and the gearbox is bolted right on to the stock rearaxle with tourqetube (not shortened) I had to make room for the breathercap in the firewall and I use a stock -32 radiator, this is the easy part! the tricky part is to find room for the steeringkolumn and the pedalassembly!
    Good Luck!

If you use the 4 banger and have to rebuild it you will spend a bunch of money. You could not sell it for what it would cost to rebuild. If you look you will be able to find a. Good running Flathead.with transmission . Cheeper than the A stuff..Mine is a high boy also. I have bought 3 good running Flatheads some as cheep as 500 to 600 transmission and all.The stearing box is a problem. I don't like a 32 part on the front of a 29 car. That is just me .What ever you do have fun looks like you found a good car.
