Convert a Model A rear to open drive?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rand Man, Mar 31, 2008.

  1. Glad you took the time to follow the links. That means I wasn't referring to you either!:)

Got any internal pictures of yours?

Sorry Tman I didn't manage to take any pics while I was making the conversion. I made a flange that slipped over the Model A pinion, then welded and pinned it onto it. I put it in the lathe and trued it up and machined it to fit onto the prop yolk. The outer part was a 1/2" plate welded to the outer torque tube and machined for a seal. If I do it again I think I would incorporate a bearing in the outer casing to add a little more support to it. My car is only running a small four cylinder so the power issue is not really an issue.
There are more pictures of it here - I hope this link works

Tman, you are a hoot. ap1930, i remember your build, remarkble work, just beautiful.
I am getting ready to convert an 'a' over to open drive myself and had looked at the storebought kit that others have shown. If you guys don't mind giving me some advice i think i'll give a shot at doing one, it looks like a good subject for a tech piece.

Just worried about nuisance breakages. I have the model A banjo already and I'd like to see if I can make it work. I'm not going to have crazy power so it's worth a shot. If I break it being stupid, fine. I just don't want it breaking everytime I leave the driveway. It might be smart to have an easily fixable weak point before the axle anyway, kind of a "fusible link".

All right, I doodled up this idea on converting a Model A banjo to open drive. No cracks about my stellar art work please.

Let me know if you think it would work or potential problems with the idea if you would please...

I dunno, I think maybe you'll have problems machining the TH400 output shaft, for a start. They're heat-treated and pretty tuff so aren't going to take sawing/drilling/turning without a fight.

Hmmmm... are they heat treated all the way through? I was assuming they would only be surface treated. That would make it more difficult.

Plan to. Have to dig up a dead 400 first though.
