Ok, so I went to pick up some old 3 wheelers today and the guy starts talking cars with me. He tells me his wife is selling her old Mercury and wonders if I'm interested. It is a 1960 2 door. No rust whatsoever. Paint is still good and shiny, no dents. All there. Upholstery is showing some wear and some seams are starting to come undone. I ask how much and he says probably $3000. He told me to think about it as it isn't advertised yet. Is this in the ballpark? Too high? Too low? Just trying to figure out if its a DEAL or not. Thanks
Well, its not really something I've been wanting/looking for but I guess if the price was right I might buy it and sit on it and maybe use for a trade or something. Then again, maybe just enjoy it. I have enough stuff as it is I don't need another car but if it was a good deal I'd consider it. I buy stuff I don't want/need whenever its a good deal cause I can at least get my money back later, maybe more, or use it as trading material. I don't know what these things go for $$$ wise.
The main problem I see with the 60 Mercury is that it's a 60. If it were a 53, a 56, or even a 59 I'd say BUY IT! But the 60's don't have the same appeal and not sure you would be able to sell it as easily. The next guy will second guess it as much as you are right now...
well you didnt tell us much, is there rust? if so where? has it been repaired? if so how good or bad. does it run? drive? the brakes good? how long has it been sitting? ect...the list can go on....did you get under it and check the bottom of it out? ect....oh and post a pic
He did say no rust and nice paint, which is a plus, but it's a '60 Merc, which is a big minus outside of being a 59-60 Chevy grille donor. No one really gives much of a damn about them - I tried to market one a few years ago and there's guys on here who have actually stripped out and demo derbied them because no one wants one. I don't have my guide handy to look but if you can jump in it and drive it down the road, $3000 is not bad for what it is, the book I'm sure says it's worth more. By comparison my '60 Pontiac 4dr in about the same shape, that I drove home, was $2400 in 1994. This one's at least a 2-door. There may be enough Ford aftermarket stuff to help redo the seats, but the other stuff will have to be custom work. It would be a great highway cruiser and travel car, that's what those cars were made to do - go 75 mph down the interstate all day long. And there is the off chance you could put it on eBay and flip it to someone in like Sweden or Norway who digs these cars and maybe double your money on it. Some of those guys will buy a rotted in half piece of **** and rebuild it from scratch, so a runner for say $5000 could look like a bargain. Being in Washington it should have a good ***le and you could get it to a port to go into a container relatively easy compared to say if it was in Iowa or something.
