Source for Tubular Front Crossmember?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by adjustablejohnsons, Feb 10, 2005.

  1. Went to the local machine and foundry today to buy a piece of 3" round to mount my new suicide perch on. Thinnest they had was 3/8" and they wanted $65.00 for a three foot piece (shortest they would sell). WTF??? Googled around a bit, but couldn't find a source for this item. I would appreciate being directed to an online source.

    Thanks

Most rearend housings use 3"axle tubes. Can you chop one up for the cause? Try machine shops that make driveshafts, some are 3" also. Sparky

    3/8" is too heavy.
How thick are your frame rails ?

  4. Model A frame. 3/8" is not too heavy for me, but it seems to be overkill. The perch is only 1/4". The point is, that had they had thinner, it would have cost less. The original Model A crossmember is about .125 thick I think.

  5. .125 is all you need... I'd be concerned about using such a thick piece (3/8" tube) welded to such a thin piece (frame).

FWIW, I paid about $45 for a 30" piece of 3" tube when we built the BFD...
