So I am about to paint the Shoebox sedan and have come across something that I can't wrap my head around. I am going to metal flake the roof and paint the bottom half a different color. There are no natrual cut lines on the doors, quaters and back window area. When one paints such paint like metal flake, with its extra thickness, do you shoot the bottom color first, mask off your lines then do the metal flake? I am thinking this way would cause a larger than normal step from the bottom color to the metal flake color that would be too hard to hide with a pinstripe or something. Or do I shoot all the metal flake then try and tape off the metal flake perfectly and **** up the lower color to the metal flake? Can I shoot the metal flake past the tape off line for the lower color and then sand and feather the doors and back window to primer then mask off and then shoot the lower color? Holy ****, I am confusing myself even now!!! Please any helpful advise. Thanks
Shoot top first and let flake go past where you want to tape, scuff, tape and paint lower part of car.
there are two options here: you could metalflake and clear your roof, sand the overspray on the quarters, wetsand the whole roof, tape the roof off, spray you base on the body, unmask the roof and clear the hell out of the whole car or you could base the whole car, mask off and flake your roof, unmask and clear the hell out of the car the trick to either is to use tons of clear (by "tons of clear" i mean lots of layers. don't hammer on ultra heavy coats and orange peel the **** out of it!) so you can wet sand and buff to reduce the stepdown on the line. with enough clear and wet sanding you should be able to reduce it enough that a pinstripe will cover it nicely.
my only concern with shooting the metal flake then sanding it down would be that the metal flake and clear could react with the lower color. Would a sealer before the lower color take away my fears? Can I use a clear base coat or binder and put a couple of coats around the edge where the metal flake tapes off to help build up the line of the lower color so to speak?
shoot roof, dont mask a hardline, sand roof, reclear again. make sure flake is buried. sand, mask roof, shoot bottom color, then shoot the bottom and roof with clear. if u want to have a **** load of flake and get rid of the transition, u will need atleast 3 clear session. sure u could try and burry a flake job in clear session, but ur guna have a film that isnt properly cured that can lead to cracking later. i like 3 coats, let dry, scuff with red scotchbrite, reclear, sand flat with 400 da/ buzz back over with 600, reclear, and block and buff. so before last clear session, shoot lower color. reclear a 4th time if u have too much an edge from top to bottom.
hok sg 100 intercoat clear,love the stuff,they also have a thicker verson of the sg100 for flake,its like a clear paint that dries fast,base the entire car,flake the roof,sg car,paint bottom,you can sand out any dirt,or touch up any spots ,then clear it,,,
