Anybody have pictures of this. I drew out these ideas that have been plagueing me. This has to be possible without removing the frame horns? Now this is going to be a LSR for El Mirage & Bonneville, no street use. I didn't draw the wishbones, I just wanted to illustrate the axles placement. I'm starting with a 32BB Frame, an I dont want to lose the frames character by loping off the front horns. The Niekamp Roadster(Es*** Frame?) has the rough idea. But I will use a 'straight'(not g***er) axle. Pictures anyone?
No pict's but I hae and old roadster frame that has morris ninor torsion bars each side . The frame needed a lot of work so I built a new one from 188 wall tube. T bars give you more space
search "underslung" you should get a few ideas... but I'm not sure about havin' the curved horns hanging out there if scrublines not right.. could turn into a catapult, or just **** **** up real nice like...
The scrubline is built into the axle, and with a 16" or bigger rim it would be fine heigth wise. Underslung is similiar, but a transverse spring looks better. Once I get my hands on things, I will figure it out.
I think he means underslung ch***is, where the spring and axle are on top of the frame rails. Your vintage racer is not going to have any suspension travel!
Levis... Am I missing something? From the pictures (vintage race car build) it looks like your axle has about 1" or less clearance between itself and the frame? How is that supposed to work? No bumps on the race track? dj

I saw a vintage racer based on flathead power a few years ago which adopted the underslung idea. How they did it was to invert the frame . It looked a bit wierd to me. Here is a link to something similar. http://www.killbillet.com/showthread.php?t=4698
A raised crossmember an a suicide front end. Has nothing to do with the underslung concept. I've seen that underslung rdstr here on the HAMB also.
This is still an underslung ch***is nonetheless. Same thing you are trying to achieve. What is different is that it has two parrallel semi-elliptic springs whereas if I understand you correctly you wish to use a transverse semi-elliptic spring. That being the case then to suicide mount it as suggested would necessitate a quite tall perch for the spring to mount to. Can't say I've seen anything quite like that however as it is a LSR car then I expect you will have a degree of la***ude as to how you go about this. Just need to bare in mind what cl*** you're running in and make sure you meet those requirements.
My 'director' if you will, has a couple red hats! He's been a huge motivation, an mentor. My resources are killer, an I won't even be compe***ive. It's 30 to 40K, just for a naturally aspirated small block, to even think about a record now. The perch will take some ingenuity.. I'm not concerned with the roll center, because the suspension will be more or less solid with maybe a qtr inch of travel. Suspension travel equates higher chances for spinning. The rear end will be mounted solid to the frame. Today I was at the 'directors' house, for an idea what to plan and look out for. Should be lots of work.. I mean fun!
Some of the old Austin 7 racers used a spring under setup. Can't see any reason you couldn't do something similar.
There is a picture on page 42 of the current Rodder's Journal (no.49) of such a sort of front end set-up on the Kenz and Leslie streamliner.

ive always liked this idea. first saw something similar on the brokesville truck. minus the frame horns.
go look up kurtis roadsters from the 50's. lots of straight axles and torsion bars. forget the buggy springs.
Yeah, something like that. It's one of those things, where once you get to actually doing it, the ideas you started with aren't really feasible.. My day dreams of this roadster motivate me to finish my other projects, so I can finally get to this.
