I do not know about you guys but the more I thought about what was in this photo, I have realized there is more to it! My buddy couverkid made me realize how bad *** it really is. I just received the photo today from the original owner of my Willys. This picture was taken back in 1960, and in my opinion has the two cars that are to be iconic to this hobby! Bad ***!
That picture could have been taken in any town on any weekend in the 60's. That's whats its all about!
I grew up on the PNW and I musta been hanging in the wrong town. IN the early 60s I don't ever remember Willy's and 32 ford coupes except for Twig Ziglers 33 coupe that sat on 4, 55 gallon drums. I'd walk past it to get to my buddy's house to work on his 37 ford 4 door...Was the only willys coupe I ever saw until I was 21....and we had a grand total of 1, 32 ford coupes in town [The Dalles]...a five window which eventually ate a telephone pole and got totalled. We had a very nice metallic orchid 34 ford tudoor sedan....Oh, and a beater 34 plymouth coupe with a SBC... Had drags in about '61 across the river in Dallesport [my dad raced his Harley 45] at the air strip but I believe it was a one-year event only...Where was that photo taken? Very impressive for 1960!
Thats what you get for living in the dalles. Just kidding. You know jones auto wrecking? When my dad was in high school he used to go there and drag home **** all the time and about 15 years ago we started going back and doing it again. Truck loads of 57-59 ford rearends 25. each. I like old bud jones.
gee whiz....Shelton, Puyallup, SIR, Deer Park, Bremerton, half a dozen others long since closed and converted to housing developments. NW was a hotbed of hotrodding and dragracing. Dang few weekends didn't find us up in Spokane during the summer - cruisin' the gut (Division, Wellesley, Riverside) at night and hearing, smelling and seeing drag races at Deer Park. Sorry for those of you in The Dalles, or Dallesport....I know there was a strip at Portland. HS parking lot was about half 28-48 cars, 49-52 Chev sedans, few Oldsmobiles, couple of Mopar versions (although that term did not yet exist). Heck, we even were allowed to stage a couple of days of drag races in front of the high school for physics cl***es. That photo that started this is just so reminiscent of the 50s and 60s car scene. That was when a feller could actually afford to build something that was compe***ive. dj
