I have a 30 Model A coupe and I need to buy a pair of headlights. Any recomendations or pictures would help. I think the bigger the better maybe 33/34 commercial what do you guys think?
Fendered? My dad put a set of 32 lights on his 30 coupe with a dropped bar and i think it looks pretty good.
No fenders. It's going to have a 32 grill with shock mounts. I like the painted buckets not chrome. Those do look very good on that style car.
It's probably best to just do like a lot of us do when we are trying to figure out what looks right on our rigs. Start checking photos of vehicles set up similar to what yours is going to be an see what headlights they are running. Lots of new photos from the Pileup posted by several different people plus other events. I think that probably 90% of us on here who have project cars going have a file of saved photos so we can refer to certain details on them for our own rigs.
Definitely consider the Guide/BLC 682-C or 682-J headlights. They were one of, if not the first 7" sealed-beams, and it makes things much easier as far as getting a good, bright, functional "beam" for night-driving. Plus, I think they look cool as...well, they're cool. The 682-C has a marker light on top that can also serve as a turn-signal, solving the problem of where to mount yer turn-signals on a rod without them looking goofy.
I think these are 34 Truck.. I put the halgen bulbs in but with those fluted lens they are marginal at best.. If you look close you'll see some sm 55w running lights on the frame.. Mint..... Pontiac Slim
I'm running these model A's on my roadster. Used the 34 commercial on my old T. Like those big lights.
I was going to start new thread this a.m. on headlights- I have 30 a on 32 rails. Has very large lights on front w/ poor visablity. I want to chage bulbs but am afraid of not taking apart correctly. There is a small "T" that is spring loaded @ bottom of light-appears to pull back and swivel down to release ring and lens. I do not want to drop this as appears expensive to re-buy. I can e-mail pics of lights but do not know how to attach to thread. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.
Not a big deal, just changed them myself a couple days ago. Loosen the horizontal nut-bolt at the bottom, then push back a little to compress the spring. You should be able to swivel that winged catch down to release. I sprayed just a bit of WD-40 on the ***embly just to free everything up. Good luck.
Bob Drake sells a reproduction 32 Ford headlight ( same size diameter as a 34 commercial ) with the very good, new designed optical reflectors. The reflectors were designed by a Optical light engineer to produce the most light available. Parr Automotive sells a turn signal kit to fit the new reflectors. I have the new reflectors and the turn signal kit on both my 32 Fords and the light from the headlight are very effective and bright. The turn signal is very effective yet not noticeable when not flashing. From their catalog TURN SIGNAL LIGHT Hidden Hidden turn signal lights mount behind the headlight lens on any car that has removeable lens headlights. (will not work with sealed beam bulbs). Socket ***emblies have metal shield over bulbs to direct light out the front of the headlight. Socket ***emblies mount to the headlight reflectors. Kits feature dual element amber bulbs for use as running lights and turn signals. Pkg EACH Two per package. Here is the web page for the turn signals http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb...S31V0N77WV71682122806a~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000042b# I added a set of Sylvania SilverStar headlight H4 bulbs and the difference between the regular H-4 Halogen bulbs and the SilverStars whiter, brighter light ( and distance down the highway ) was very noticable If you bought the new BoB Drakes .. you could always scuff the headlight buckets and paint them
Thanks!!!!!!!!! Do I have to be careful the lens doesnt drop out or is it retained some how in the outer rim? Thanks again.
It will pretty much be retained by the ring. Go slow, laying it flat as you take it out, the lens will stay put.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a great reply to a "new-be" here. All my cars I have built had "king bee" lights, this is my 1st w/ "big" lights. These look like mine. If someone will let me e-mail them pics I can show exact lights.
On my 29, I used a pair of stock plated A headlights with the conversion reflectors that are readily available, turn signals mounted to the reflectors. I had to reclock the reflectors for the turn signal socket to clear inside the housing. I've been satisfied with them at night so far, but haven't pushed my luck with night driving yet.
33-34 commercial are nice. have them with turn signals built in the reflectors. oops, pictures. the lenses on Fords are held to the rim with little spring clips. But be careful on old ones, might be rusted away are gone Then boom gl*** hits floor.sad.
