Hey everyone, I have a couple questions. I'm dropping a 302 into my Fairlane and I've heard that either 77 F-150 or Lincoln MK7 302 motor mounts will work for the swap. Has anyone else tried this? Also wondering if anyone has any ideas for a radiator. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

Yes thats exaxtly what i was going to do. Dwcided to keep it all og with the y block though. As for the radiator i have seen guys run the stock v8 radiators with a 302 aswell.

I was just going to build the original 292 but when I got the engine apart the block was cracked. Really came as a suprise since the car was running, not well though hence the rebuild. The radiator will only work if I mount a seperate trans cooler. I have an air cooled ford-o-matic but planned on dropping the ****** currently behind the 302 into the Fairlane as well. However if you know anyone looking for a few y-block parts I have pretty much everything for a 292 except the block.

Use the C4 behind the 302! The Fordomatic behind the 292 is a two-speed that will be the weak point of the whole car. (some guys fitted them with the FMX case, netting 3 speeds out of them) But the C4 is up-to-date, serviceable, and available. Also an easy fit to your rear crossmember)

Just a thought for you to ponder...
The FE engines use the same mounts as the y-block and are a direct bolt in .

    I say go 390 and a 4spd!

..use the original radiator. I'm running a built 428 in my 1956 Mainline and the 312 radiator keeps it cool in more ways than one.

If the radiator is in good shape it should be fine. I am running a 351 Cleveland with a 4 speed toploader trans. in my 56 Ford Fairlane and I haven't had any cooling problems. I made up a flat steel plate to adapt the stock motor mounts to the crossmember. Good Luck

Don't worry, I'm not keeping the ford-o-matic. It may be up for sale after a bit. I am using the ****** currently behind the 302, swapping them out as a unit. If my radiator was any good I'd just put an aftermarket trans cooler on and call it done. Mainly the 302 is being used because it's there, runs, and was in my price range. And I kind of like the 302s. All kinds of Mustang builders around here constantly upgrading so I can get stuff off them pretty cheap ;-)

The way I did it, use '63 Galaxie 289 mounts, these were also used on some early '65 Mustangs; H-O-W-E-V-E-R, they put the engine TOO LOW in a '56, '57; put spacers between the mount and the block, I think its about 3/4 of an inch, but check the overall level of the engine, one last thing the 289 mounts are a single stud, you will probably have to elongate the frame mount holes, make it into one long slot, this will allow you to put about any small Ford, except for a 351M and 400, into any '54 to '59 car. Hope this helps! "The requirement for working on our freight dock is the ability to destroy an anvil with a gl*** hammer!!"
