My 29' model A steering maxes out when the tires are only turned about 15 degrees. is this the normal steering radius for model A's. ive replaced both tie rod ends, seals and caps. the tie rod ends seem to max out against the spindles even with the steering disconnected. Any advice on how to increase the steering radius?
I can't comment on Model A turning radius but I recently measured my '36 axle/spindle combination and they turn 40 degrees before the spindle hits the stop nuts. I will build my steering arms to use the full 40.
What do you mean 'maxes out'? Do the tires hit the radius rods? Are the spindles hitting the stop on the kingpin? Is this a stock 29 axle? The model A has a 17' turning radius. Thats a small circle. >>>>>>the tie rod ends seem to max out against the spindles <<<< describe what this means. The tie rods swivel on the spindle arms. They cant hit the spindle itself.
yes its a stock 29 axle, maxed out meaning spindles hitting the stops in the tie rod ends. i think thats what im trying to say. when the tie rod is disconnected from the spindles -the spindles turn much more.
Sounds like maybe your Tie rod ends are binding, perhaps by the steering arm itself is swinging possibly upwards a bit due to its angle. Hard to explain really on here, umm, if you look at your steering arms when the wheels are straight, the surface around the tierod mounting hole should be straight and basically parrallel to the ground, so when the wheels turn they will pivot straight and the tierod doesnt start to swing upward to a point where it is at too much angle and the tierod end bottoms itself out so to speak. I dont know if i have made this very clear, but i do know i have seen this same situation before and it was corrected by correcting the angle of the steering arms.
Something is not right! My stock A will turn about 45 deg. On a left turn the tire hits the drag link and on a right on the stop. Look at some pictures- maybe something in upside down or ??????? Good luck!
I have been doing some steering work on a 29 Model A I just picked up and was running into a similar prob. Check to soo if the Tie Rod adjusting bolts are hitting the wishbones. That is what was shortening up my turning radius. I unbolted the tierods and re-set the toe in with the "locking bolts" in a up orientation and regained about all of the steering in my stock model A box. I can lock to the right and almost to the left. Check 'er out.
