Projects I Would Like A Fuel Gauge/Sender Recommendation Please

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by cactus1, Oct 17, 2010.

  1. I hate to start a thread just for this but, can anyone recommend a decent fuel gauge/sender for me please. I would ask my friends but I don't have any ( real life ones anyway :))

I was looking at this SW one http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Stewart-Warner-Electrical-Fuel-Gauges,5324.html ( no Speedway drama please). They sell a sender that is adjustable for tank depth. Does anyone have any experience with this one or can recommend another. My build is suppose to be late '50's- early '60's so I would like something that looks the part. The tank I am using is '31 Chevy (I think) that does not have a sender, so I will be starting from scratch.

    Thanks peeps!

Unless you're replacing with original I think all you'll find is an adjustable sender

Go with the gauge with the look you want and use the sending unit that is recommended with that gauge. I have used several of the universal cut to fit units with no problems. They just have to be the same ohm rating as the gauge.

  4. Yes, definitely. There is no original ( that I am aware of.) I was probably not very clear in my first post. I am looking for all new. I know everyone says the new SW stuff is junk, But it is all I can find that at least has the "look" I am going for.

And yes I could use a stick!:)

If your tank is '31 it has a location for a sending unit.

Filling station has new repop gauges and senders if you are using original dash and tank.

I have the same EXACT gauge and sending unit set up in my 32 Roadster.
I like the gauge and the sending unit and would recommend them if you like the " look ".

Nothing against your choice of supplier ... but a little known fact is that Car Quest sells the exact same gauge and sender ... LOCALLY :D if you have a Car Quest store in your city.

  8. Hmmm. New question then. Does anyone recognize this tank? I need to get a cap for it. When I looked for one at the filling station, they were $75.00 or something ridiculous like that:eek:. There are about 6 threads showing per the 1/2".

And thanks for all of the quick replies!

Dang. That's a neat looking old tank. I would go to great lengths to find a cap for it. The threads look almost like NTP. Hard to tell from the picture.

Yep, fillingstation is kind of proud of their prices, more for restoring old chivvys to original/correct I think.

  10. I had a '29 tank that had the gauge built in, but alas, it was too far gone to use. When I bought this one at the swap, the feller selling it said it was '31? What do you think? Other than the drain plug, those are the only two holes in it.

  11. "Tanks" and "Rock Valley" have threaded caps. They may be to big. But worth a call. Would be a neat project for someone learning the machinist trade. Do you have a vocational school in your area. Students will usually do the work if you buy the materials.

'27 Chivvy thru '29 tanks had fill neck on the driver's side with Float gauge/window indicator on the p*** side. In '30 & after they went to an electric gauge with sender mounted in top, right of center toward p***enger's side. I don't know what the pre'27 tank looked like.

  13. I wonder if this is an old repro tank ?
Oh, and the threads appear to be too fine for NPT. I am pretty sure I looked into that a while ago, I think? Hell I don't know.
