Will this work to quiet the exhaust note?

As politely as possible you should ask to see the decibelometer reading, and which code/law if any, you were breaking.
I have no patience for an officer who is subjectively "enforcing" the "law".
Try calling the cops because a guy has a VERY loud sound system in his vehicle, and see how quickly they respond.
If it's 2:00 a.m. in a residential area, and you're rapping your pipes like an ***hole, then it's a problem. Otherwise, they can pound sand.

If you have ever seen any of those dash cam videos where some giant guy beats the living **** out of some poor small, female cop, you can understand her being wary. However, I think her judgement is way off. She should have seen that you posed no threat. Guys in hot rods generally are not muderous ganstas on crack -There's that new band name you've been looking for.

Yep, I'd have it checked by the cops, with whatever meter they use to test for the sound level. If it's within acceptable range, I'd leave it alone, but ask for a printout of the results to keep the next time you get pulled over. If it's truly too loud, then try to muffle it to get it compliant.

Ok, the nerd in me is showing.

As an audio engineer, I'll submit this-

We're in the shop, the radio is playing at a 'normal' volume. I tell you I'm going to turn the volume knob up, and for you to tell me when you can hear that it got louder. "Whoa, right there!" you say. That's 3 db. About what the human ear can detect as "differences" in volume, measured in decibels.

*Another useless note- you have to actually double the wattage of output of the amplifier to gain every 3db volume increase.

It also should be noted that some frequencies (in the mid and upper-mid range) are perceived by most people as being louder, when they're actually not.

And that wraps up our o/t audio lesson for today. :D

I installed a set of street legal 3 chamber Flow-daddys on my o/t '91 Fox car and it still rattled the windows on both sides of my driveway.... :D I know it bothered my ol' lady and probably the neigbors next door whenever I fired the car up. :( I got pulled over once in that car, but the nice cop let me go without writin' me up.. :)

You should have backhanded her in the mouth. One of a few things would have happened. She would shut the hell up and quit being such a bi%$h after being "re calibrated".
She would have got all hot and bothered, and "frisked" you with a smile. (hey some chicks like it ruff).

See it would have all been ok had you taken matters into your own hands.

Oh ya or she might have tied your *** in a knot and taken you to jail, but if you are a betting man the odds might be on the first two options. Just sayin'.......

Why not invest in one of these noise meters $50 at Radio Shack, it would give you a good base to work from, take the reading at 45 deg from the tail pipe some 20' away at least you would know if you were / are legal.

I have a similar meter from Maplin Electronics it's been a great help when playing with road rally cars in the past where a very strict noise limit is enforced.

Thanks for this. I have the same problem.

  14. I had a Blazer that was louder than I liked. To demonstrate the effect, the guy at the muffler shop held a small gl***pack over the end of the tailpipe while the truck was running to give me an idea what to expect. It was HUGE. So, just try that on yours to get an idea what to expect. (I held another one over the other tailpipe). You'll be surprised

Has anyone ever heard of or seen any of the diesel-tuner guys being cited for noise? My F350 is stock and I think it's too loud for early morning start-ups. Some of those black smoke belching stainless-steel sewer pipes are LOUD!
Damn I hate double standards. Makes you want to kick the dog some days.

  16. I had a guy in a "tuned" Ford diesel pickup lay on it in in the lane beside me this morning and blow black **** all over my daily driver! Glad it is a POS that I don't care about and also glad I had the window rolled up! Yes it was super loud too. Stacks would be a good idea on those things . . .

  20. Geeeez, over here the cops let a driver finish his joint first. Then they squat down to eye level of the offending driver and introduce themselves. Then they politely ask if you would like to see the video of the offence.

I found a Factory X pipe at a swap meet. For some reason they are yanking them off the GT-500 Shelby's and selling them.
A very nice piece for $20. Installed on my 60 Apache with a 383 stroker. Turbo Mufflers out the rear. It is actually to quiet.

So I tried making a set of traps for the exhaust ends, like baffles, well **** that don't work, she was louder by 10 db.. So I made some fittings to place into the exhaust ends, mine are oval, and drilled about 20, 1/2" holes in them, that was worth a 5db reduction. I'm at a db rating of 87 at idle, 117 at full throttle, and 132 at open headers full throttle 105 at idle, The loudest I can yell is 122, the loudest the wife could yell is 105. My loudest fart was a 35. Well now thats just silly.

Around Denver there are chopper motorcycles that are sooo loud you can hear them miles away. The cops don't seem to bother with them. They do bust the BOOM BOOM BOX cars and dark tinted windows cars.

No. When was the last time you heard a Harley with exhaust baffles still intact?

Which just shows how ****in' dumb they are!

70db is barely audible, quieter than the quietest production Harley, as dB doesn't go up in a progressive scale, such that 100 dB is twice as loud as 50dB etc.

The maximum volume for car exhausts in the UK, for when you register a new build hot rod, is 98dB! And that is fairly acceptable, about the same as any large production car at full throttle.

Next time you are stopped, ask them to tell you how many Bels 90 decibels is. :D
