I want to install new cam bearings in my '64 390 FE but I don't have the proper tool.....
I can get my hands on a home-build sbc installation tool. Will this work??

Any other easy options beside building one my own?? It's hard to get stuff like that here in the Netherlands...

    Thanx, Ramon

  2. The SBC cam bearing tool won't have the proper size plugs for your cam bearings. You can order a universal tool from Summit Racing (see their site on line) that will fill the bill for you and work on several popular engines as well. they are not price busting expensive and if you can't get them to ship to you have them ship to me and I'll ship to you. No problem.

Thanks for the info and the offer to send some summit stuff to the Netherlands but I think it's easier to build something myself.... Should't be that hard...

  4. Its not hard at all. You just need a bearing to use to size your plug. The tool works like a slide hammer.

Oh it also helps to have an old camshaft to make a bearing ream from incase you manage to burr one of the bearings.

You're right, it's not hard at all to make bushing drivers - if you have a metal lathe available.

I have made cam tools with old camshafts and a large body washer a few times.Just cut the journals off the old cam and driill the center to 3/8.I use 3/8 threaded rod and fuel line to protect the bearings you just installed.place the bearing on the journal then the washer on the rod and double nut it to keep the rod from spinning.Start with the rear bearing,
Place a washer in the front of the motor and draw on the nut to pull the rear bearing into place.Move on to the next one,if you choose use another journal to guide the end so you have perfect alignment every time.on some engines like pontiacs this works better than hitting them in witch causes the bearing to sit crooked at times.
Takes a bit longer but works every time.
