I figured someone would call me on that. :) I know all about making little boo-boos along the way when making a project (in the article the gentleman using the reciprocating saw veered from the cut line and stated that it would bug him every time he sat in the driver seat) but its when I read statements about just throwing something together and half-***ing it and saying things along the lines of "it's no big deal" or "we don't care" when referring to little mistakes that kind of kill it for me.
If that's the case, why bother writing about it and taking pictures? I'm sure they do care, but their devil-may-care at***ude sounds like something I would say when I was trying to accomplish something with a few beers in the tank.
No offense was meant. I am grateful that the folks who make these projects do it (mostly) with tools that the Average Joe (me) might have in his garage. They make mistakes along the way (e.g. not clamping enough support to hammer the bend in the face of the aluminum) and have the balls to write about it. Their mistake saved someone else from doing the same and a lot of "tech" articles omit the boo-boos. I applaud that.
But take pride in it. Rant over. The end result is awesome and speaks for itself. :)

Oh, I had another idea that has some show car appeal... what about making a homemade scoop with some clear (or tinted) plexigl*** using a vacuum form so you can get the exact shape and size you want and still show off the goodies?

I'm a post guy[usually] when it comes to tri fives but Squirrel your 55 is really bad ***. Back in the 60's I had a red and white pontiac powered 55 so your car really hits the mark with me. Keep up the good work.

Dude Falfa your 55's pretty sick. Haha idk, the no hood "in your face, bring it" appeal is certainly do-able...

    Gigantor. that clear one!
Yea that would be pretty rad, Iv got no idea how to do that stuff though. But i would love to see that (or sell me one if you get it down!)

A HAMBer once showed a detailed process of how it can be done with home tools (an oven, a shopvac and some home-made moulds in a Tech article to make tail light lenses. The concept is the same.
Some guys form their own bubbles for bubble tops... I even heard that someone used a barbecue grille and gravity to make their bubble.
I guess there are more ways than one to skin a cat.

I had to turn the picture right side up to see the car, it was worth the trouble, nice car! No hood at all works with a bad*** enough car

The clear bubble idea is neat, it would probably require a mold to make the shape right...or maybe not, if you make the shape of the hole in your fixture just right so you can cut the unused part off. Getting it to work well and look good probably requires a good sized oven with good temp control though...oolycarbonate needs to spend some time at high temp to get rid of the little air bubbles

I always thought i the ***asin was pretty bad ***, Vette scoop looks right on. Anyone know anything about this car? I think it ran at Irwindale in the late 60's early 70's but i first saw it when i was a kid run out at Woodburn Dragstrip in Oregon, when i was like 8 or so back in the early 90s. No longer had a dropped straight axle in it, was more of a prostreet style, but i remember the hilborn!

Not sure this one would give you the room you need but the ford thunderbolt style scoop looks killer on g***er type builds.
speedway has at least something similar but without the screen in back.
This is the only pic I could find that shows it pretty good on a 55.

The CalCustom finned scoop is nice it goes well with the lines of the car. As much as I love everything about the Two Lane Blacktop 55, the scoop is a little primative, those boxy scoops only look good if the car is very bare bones with no frills, however if thats what your going for the Two Lane scoop is tried and true... just not the most graceful

then run some short marine filters or something as thin as, so then you can run a full hood when you want to be sneeky

I think you either have to run a teardrop or the torpedo style on a 55-56. Although I too loved the two lane blacktop car.

The Ford Truck/Pontiac Superduty scoop was still mounted on school busses(backwards)
all the way into the 80's.
I got mine off of a Mack dumptruck.
there are big truck wreaking yards out there too, just farther away.
