    THANKS FOR THE GOOD INFO/FEEDBACK!

So Lokar and Gennie shifter people give me your opinions, are there kits complete & simple to install, etc?

I will be purchasing one or the other for a automatic GM/350 mid 50's Chevy soon and want simplicity (good linkage) and function.

I was told you cannot put a custom shift nob on lokars?

    ... Thanks,xtralow

I went with a Lokar because I have a son who likes to play in my cars and I feel safer with the push****on shifter, just in case he bumps it. Easy installation also.

that push****on thing is lame. . it just feels kind of late model/streetroddy the way the action is so . . . dainty.

Gennies bang into position and feel way better. There is just more of a simple mechanical sense to them.

I had a Lokar in my Chevelle, it was great except for the stupid ****on. How does the Gennie work?

  9. Gennie has a gate ,like a column shift , no ****on , so anything you want to use for shift knob is ok...just drill and tap a hole and screw it on, no need to use anything custom..lokar uses a ****on in the center of the knob, so the knob has to be made to work with the shifter..but lokar has many choices and there are other people making knobs for them

i've used both in customers cars, both work ok...never had a problem with either

my own car has a Gennie...for no other reason i bought and installed it in 1992.....before Lokar

I made my own, a simple mechanical linkage operated deal with a standard four speed knob threaded onto the shaft.

The only drawback being that it's strictly a detent shifter, easy to bump in or out of gear if you're not carefull.

(I threaded the tip of the shaft to accept standard shift knobs, but any diameter shaft could be used, and any thread pitch could be cut into it if you wanted something different.)

you know what ****s about both of them?

    they don't index through 1, 2, 3, etc..

it is real easy to bump from 1 to three when you're trying to haul some ***. or from 3 to 1 when you wanted 2 -

you've got to be real easy with it -

It would be way better if it had a ratchet mechanism

I've used both kinds and both styles installed easy and worked real good.
I didn't like the extra work to make a skull shift knob for the Lokar with a ****on, and working that ****on on the tall shifter can be a pain some times.
I used a Gennie in my merc and it worked perfect for a lot of years. I like the gate system a lot better and you can use "whatever" you want for a shift knob.
I am using a 23" Gennie in my Sedan project.
Contact VAPHEAD here on the HAMB. His company owns Gennie and he will hook you up with what you need and a good deal at that.

Definitely Gennie. The ****on on the Lokar is a pain in the ***. In real cold weather it takes way too much presure to depress. I had trouble getting it in gear to move the car out of the garage.

For me it's definitly GENNIE. For one reason Gennie was first and as far as I'm concerned Lokar just got in a market that Gennie had established and rode the wave. I don't like the push ****on either and in some of their models the ****on rattles and can be a pain in the ***.

I have a Gennie in my 40 GMC and it has worked without problem or even needing adjusting since I put it in in the late 80's. (except for when I R&R'd and overhauled the T350 about 10 years ago, I reset the adjustable rod.)

One thing I wonder about the Gennie is, the so called reverse lock out gate isn't very "there".
It's real easy to slide it past it so maybe mine's too early a model to have one? (It's got a working neutral safety switch) and I heard NHRA requires a "positive reverse lock out" shifter...
Does the Gennie "gate" qualify for this?
Anyone here an NHRA inspector and/or know the real answer to this?
That's the only reason I'd put up with the push ****on nonsense.
(Of course, if you never plan on racing that doesn't much matter...I don't have a drive shaft safety yoke (yet) either)

I like Lokar myself and now you can get pistons, skulls, eight balls, deco style, brushed or even plain black knobs for them. You can also get floor mount type shifters from them too instead of always having to mount directly on the transmission as they used to be. As for some having a difficult time depressing the ****on, i have seen this problem before and it is easily rectified by adjusting the shifter by only a small amount and then this problem doesnt occur again. I know up here we have cold nights and open cars, and have not had a serious difficulty with shifting or depressing the ****on providing that everything had been adjusted properly.

I use a Gennie shifter. I don't much care for the ****on...just something else to have to screw with. As far as I know both are easy to install and work right.

I went the Gennie way after having 3 people I know have that safety but in the Lokar just stop working. The Gennie was cheaper by like $50 and it works well and installed in about 1 hour. I have it on a Ford AOD which is a weird ****** to mate anything to (or so I was told). Hope that helps?

Fab32 is correct. The lokar knob and cable that run it can rattle and your selection of knobs you can use with a lokar shifter are limited. And yes,Gennie was the first to m*** produce this type of shifter.
PS- Hey **** What damn fan club would that be.The lincoln driving fat boy club!!

Great timing on this thread... as I have to make a decision shortly. I had a lokar but hated not being able to find a cool knob. I have been eyeing the new B&M streetrod shifter that just came out in the new SPeedway catalog (12 or 15" only).. but also looking at the Gennie. When I noticed the other day that Vaphead ownes it, it has leaned me that way... I would like to get something that has a 4 sp look (short with a bend in it) so may have to build my own shaft

Would love to havethe new Julianno 40 shift column but $600 is so much money...

Anyone using the new B&M set up...

I have used Lokar and they are ok I prefer the Gennie and have used the older style B&M cable type with auto trans. Lokar is better with kids in the car but Gennie seems to have a better feel.

I would go with a gennie shifter..........thats because i am the guy that builds all the products that leave the gennie shifter building. they are super easy to install, they look alot better, the linkage is not a cable, it is a rod with heim joints on both ends. you can put any knob on them.......our new catalog will be coming out in about a month, you can call us at1-866-623-1963 and we will send you a new catalog........p.s. they got in some bad *** knobs

    thanks,
    chad

Lokars are not as great as thet are made out to be. I spent an extra 40 bucks for the 8-ball knob and the ****on never worked right. I also had to modify the trans brackets and the lock gate never did work right.
