I went with a Gennie and went with that one because I was told by a very reliable source the lokar has really dropped in quality lately a lot of problems with the ****on thing. the gennie was easy to install and no push ****on **** and I also dug the long swan neck it really gives it a nice look. also I was at SEMA this year and they (gennie) had a whole bunch of shafts that are not in the catalog you may want to call and see if they have added them.

Is there a link where you can check out the knobs from Gennie?

After spending all day Saturday trying to get my new Lokar Nostalgia working righton my TH 350, am still not happy with it. Can't get it adjusted where all the detents work right .The arm on the shifter ended up at abour 4 o'clock, going to have to build a offset in my 27 roadster floor as it sits about 3" above where the floor should be flat. And there ain't a helluva lot of room in a 27 T roadster floor to start with. I wish I had bought a Gennie. But I got grandkids, so I went with Lokar for the lockout.

  8. I own both a Lokar and a Gennie. Boss likes Lokar, we sell tons of them, never had a problem in over 3 dozen? in the last couple years.

MilesM sent me his old Gennie for my Touring. I am starting to really like it.

I can see how the Lokar is better with little ones around.

As far as shift knobs for the Lokar, they are really simple to adapt if you take one apart. Any guy with a lathe or a drill press can modify a resin knob in a short time to work on the Lokar.

I agree with DrJ about the detents on both, HEY VAPHEAD! HOW ABOUT A RACE VERSION!?!?!?!?!??:D

I would say if I was to order a new one, I would do the Gennie. Nothing against the Lokar, but I like my Gennie.

I had a Lokar and sold it before i ever used it to buy a Gennie 23" swan stick then i cut it and added 7" more to make it a 30" swan stick so my Grabowski skull could scare the pants off the pavement!

Seriously! Is this a possibility? I want to run a Gennie in my coupe (TH350), but I need something with positive detents, as I'll be manually shifting (and racing) this thing pretty much constantly...

Or has anyone MODIFIED a Gennie for more "spirited" driving???

Same here - I have a 23" Gennie (thanks Vaphead) in my 61 truck (T-350). I have to rebend it a little because 1st hits the seat (minor problem) and I like using home made custom handles

I DO NOT like the way it slips around in 1-2-3 like Tudor and others were saying.

I have a ****on style 3 speed that I got out of a mail jeep in the junkyard for $12 - This thing is the ***S!! real positive feel. The linkage that was on it was 2 pieces of all thread welded together and looked "factory":D

I prefer the Gennie. I put a Lokar in my p/u and a Gennie in my rod. Both went in easily but the Gennie was a snap to get the safety switch right and as many have said, a big choice of knobs. I have several custom knobs that I change out regularly in the rod.

I have the Lokar in my '53 chevy truck. I wouldn't buy another... The only way I could get the damn thing to quit rattling was to mount it to the floor of the truck, instead of the ****** as designed.

Also, the ****on isn't all that intuitive to the regular Joe. The little tooth in the gate setup has been broken off three times, once by the exhaust shop, once by the alignment shop, and once by a quick lube. The guys who jumped in to move it couldn't figure out how to get the shifter to move, so they forced it and busted it. I finally made a sign so it wouldn't happen again. That, and I don't let anyone else drive it if possible...

    LOL, here we go again!

I have a Lokar and it works great, I have NEVER had a problem with it and the ****on has save my *** several times, wether it be kids or dumb ***es!
Yes the shift knob chice was limited and always will be.

I plan to put a genie in the 58, but I read somewhere, that someone took the lokar and put a slot in the front and made a separete ****on or latch nechanism to shift and was able to use any knob. And he did all this before the chrome was done. Yes, lokar sent him the unchromed shift arm and let him make his mods then finished the unit. That sounds pretty dame cool to me and solves the kid thing and lets u use a nice knob.

Either way genie or lokar, niether were used back in the day so no arguement there.......

Oh by the way Blueskies, mine never rattles and if I had someone work on my car (which I NEVER do). And they couldnt operate a shifter then they need NOT be working on MY car!!!

I'm just looking for an auto shifter that I can use in the coupe, without having to go with the standby Hurst Quarter Stick...

  18. Eight years later and I still like my Gennie. Plus I can put any shifter know I want on it with no h***le.

From what I understand, the mechanism in a Gennie is based on an original Ford application. Lokar's shifter knobs just look way too 80's to me and seems rather stiff. Besides, if it's important to you, Gennie just introduced over 70 different shifter knobs that work with their shifters.

I just bought a Gennie and got it installed . Here are my thoughts

Geat quality and easy to install (dispite the junk instructions)and the shape of the shaft is nice

I hate the lack of a pattern and I am afraid of the ease to go into N or R with little to no problem if I am driving it in a 'spirited' manner. You can go straight from Low to N to R with an easy bump unless you put it into D and make sure the shaft moves (its spring loaded). I am hoping that with some use the tension will loosen and the shaft will want to slide out of the vertical pattern with more ease.

The issue is that if you have pressure on the shaft (pulled towards you - which is the way you would naturally if holding it) and push it forward there is nothing to stop it until you reach the top (the spring load is supposed to make the shaft move away from you but it does not take much pressure to over ride that. )

I really think the company needs to redesign the pattern/ lock out path to prevent a bumping from L2 to N or R.. A simple little nub in the shift gate may be enough so you have to use a pattern. Thou the Lokars have that ****py push ****on it would save you (I have had both versions now). I would be interested in seeing how the new B&M street rod shifter is set up..

If you are the type that likes to just put it in gear and drive, the Gennie is great, if you want to play with the shifter and manual down and upshift, you may want to consider something else or pay attention to what you are doing..

  21. I used a 16" Lokar nostalgia and at first it had a few problems going together, and once and a while it still sticks, but overall it's not too bad. I just have to get around to changing the shift knob to something cooler looking.
