I've been looking for an F-1 transmission cross member for awhile now for my A-V8 project. I finally found one but the truck has a straight 6. My question is did the V8 and straight 6 F-1's have the same transmission x-member? To my untrained eye they look to be the same. Just looking to confirm this before I spend any time cutting it out. Thanks, PAracer
Im pretty sure they are the same. They used the same trans. Its a royal ***** cutting those rivets out even with a torch.
Get the front shock mounts too..... And yes, from what I've seen I think those crossmembers are the same, just like Mudslinger said, because the ******'s are the same.
It wasn't the engine that made the difference - it was the model. F1's are different than the bigger trucks. As noted above Ford used the same engine and trans, and used a variety of rear mounts to adjust for the dropped x-member in the bigger trucks. Those big truck x-members are favored by the hotrod guys with large transmissions so they don't have to cut away as much firewall and floor by mounting the tail lower. You should be in good shape with any F1 crossmember.
An interesting thing is all the holes are in the cross member to make it a right hand drive for export. I rememer seeing the mastercylinder holes etc in place on mine. My F1 had the center butchered out so I cut mine out and made one out of angle iron and square tubing.
All early Fords are set up to be right or left hand drive. Look an an A frame...has steering box holes on BOTH sides.
I simply used some 2x3 square tubing and cut the mount off the crown vic mount and welded itback on but htat is with a 74 nova clip on it at that point you can add the step up down or even with the mount where ever you need it or even mount it top or bottom of the fram since you have all that room due to the running boards being so low?
