did all 1932 ford 5w coupes just have a door lock only on the right side? so no door lock on the left just the handle? thanks in advance.
also, since I was a kid in the 50s/60s, I was told that some cities had an ordinance about only entering the car from the curb side...and that was the reason for the right side lock.
my 49 dodge is the same way... i was told it was because so many parallel parked back then. and the companies did it so you would slide over and get out on the sidewalk...not in traffic. not sure if thats true or not...
Interesting thread. I have heard of the curb side entrance into your car and also; a courtesy lock... The driver would unlock the p*** door for his lady friend, who would reach over and unlock the fella's door who would be the driver....
Actually, some 51/52 F-1 pickups have the key lock on both doors. They are the DeLuxe 5 star model. They also had a locking glove box, arm rests and dual wipers Most towns had parking with curb side only exit for the p***engers. So the manufacturers saved a TON by only installing one key lock.
ok so i see the door handles on ebay all the time. what about the lock? where would i find one? thanks
37 to 42 Willys only had the curb side door locks also, and you already know now about the 32 Fords which I also have. Sounds like all the old car makers did this. I wonder what year they started putting the lock on each side, I would guess after the war or during say around 46 to 50?
Yep, I have a 32 truck that was RHD (came from Argentina) It had a lock on the LH door only. I bought some 32 3 window handles from Mac's with both locks. Later,Mark
32 Chevrolets the same, p***engers side lock. I guess this means we all need to get used to sliding, got to always have a honey to ride, or have to find some nos export, right hand drive keyed handle. Dammit !
