Ed Duncan, Not exactly a picture of Old Bridge, but a picture of me at Old Bridge I think around 1963. I was just a skinny kid. Denny Z

Some more LI shots, these featuring George Wagner

Here is an early photo (1969) by John Barrick of Frank Conway's Cromwell Auto Body built sedan driven by George Wagner. As the picture notes, Conway later switched from the 101 numerals to the X-9.

Here is one of the early X-9's that Frank Conway built. It was a vega that was driven by George Tet. George was of Japanese origin and the car featured a picture of Japanese Geisha girl on the side. Interesting to note that George Wagner's own Z-1 coupe is behind the X-9. George Wagner would resume driving for Conway in the X-9 after George Tet retired. (not sure of photographer)

George again at Islip in the Z-1 (not sure of photographer)

I remember the Thunder Wagon from Freeport, it also had that little vent bump on the roof over the driver, it's one of those great childhood memories. My aunt and uncle used to bring me there a lot in 62-63. Also have the Thunder Wagon on 8mm film somewhere. I remember it was also just #6, the J6 was later on. Always thought that was an awesome paint scheme on that car. One of my all time favorites....

Sincere apologies if I posted this earlier. Kind of an older, long but neat thread. At Tucson with Hank Arnold in the "Twister" with Jerry Coons Sr. alongside back in the early 60's. Also one of Hank in his first car "The Honey Bucket" back in '53.

In # 6938 The first picture of the "Thunder Wagon" was at Freeport and shown on the left is Fran Smith while to the right that is Harry Keeley lifting the hood. That was a 1937 Chevy that was pulled from the backyard of an elderly man in Centereach that had recently passed away (Late 1961). The windshield had gas ration stickers on it from WWII which was when it was parked. The chassis was a basically stock 1937 Chevy. The J6 coupe was that same chassis which we put a full 1937 Chevy body on for 1966 so we could run Islip. The 1966version was the same chassis but had 4 link front & rear with torsion bars. The
coupe in the picture was circa 1969 or so & we changed to leaf spring rear and Flemke front end still with 4 links front & rear and modified the rear clip to give more axle clearance. The AMX in the picture has a fabricated straight rail front clip added and had independent front end put together by Fran Smith.

That brings us to the restored J6 that is on LI now. That car is the AMX version with a 37 Chevy coupe body on it but the front of the cage is angled to fit the AMX. If you look at the chassis the center rail between the front & rear clip is still that same 1937 chassis that was built for the 1962 season.

I have no clue on the Evans car. I think the 07 is Tony Caprio. He came east from California. He never did much at Seekonk. He ran about mid-pack each week. The car was super clean though. The hood was made out of plexiglass so the engine was visible. The 37 is Vinny Anaroummo (sp?) I was at Seekonk the night he climbed the wall between 1 & 2. It danced on the top of the wall. They pulled off the loose parts and secured the roof. He came out and ran the feature that night. The still shot doesn't do justice to a very scary accident.

Bullfather, the 07 Coupe was driven by Jimmy Griffin and this was at Franklin County Speedway in VA. It was owned by my father Speedy Thomas. He is bringing me a couple of boxes with 70's & 80's picks this weekend. I am going to be scanning them for him and will try to get some of the best ones loaded on the site.

  17. best ones??? post them all haha thanks for sharing though!

  18. Is 07Son Talmadge? Good to see some more southern boys on here. I actually got that #07 blue coach photo from Paul. I guess he drove it some too. Those guys changed cars like underwear it seems. Kerry Viar

  19. The #40 Vega is Harold Smith's car out of Bassett,Va. He built my #46 Coach. The Vega was driven mostly by Billy Hensley.

No, Jeff Hicks. Linda is my mother, and Speedy is my StepFather. I think that Jimmy was driving it at this time right before Joe Thurman starting driving for him. He and Talmadge have a body at the old shop that they are thinking about restoring of this car.
