Performance Plus Tires is a place in Long Beach (Southern California) that sells(a**** other stuff) a lot of Wide Whitewall tires to a lot of local guys. They also set up at Long Beach Swap meet where i bought a set of Wide Whites about 3 weeks ago. Well, about a week later 2 of the tires whitewalls started to go VERY yellow. I go to show the guy at the Swap Meet yesterday but he didn't want to walk 100 feet to the car. No biggy. So i drive down to Long Beach today and waste $20 bucks in gas in the big 54 Caddy, and a half day away from my shop. TWO ****ING HOURS i wait for them to swap out the tires. AND to add a little slap in the face they charge me $24 mounting and balancing fee to change THEIR defective tires. This was after the manager and owner consulted eachother to see if they were even going to make it right. I'll NEVER buy from them again ! NEVER!
I'm with you brutha. I went to them to save on my Coker shipping. Called them in advance about a set of WW's just to make sure they were in stock. Went down on a Saturday and was there the minute they opened. 3 hours later they come up to me and tell me that they only had 3 of the 4 tires. They blamed Coker for mis-labling a tire. They guy told me he would put my old tires on and order a complete set and put them on the following week. Said he would give me a call during the week and when I came back I'd be first in line. I never got a call from them. I had to call and check for my tires. The next Saturday I show up as soon as they open... and I still had to wait for 1 hour. When it came time to pay, they wouldn't budge on the price. Said they couldn't give me a discount on the tires or the mounting fee's becuase it was Cokers fualt and not theirs. ********! I work hard all week and Saturday's are family time. I'd rather pay shipping from Coker than waste my Saturday's hanging out at their shop.
The Hibdon tire in BA by my work did me right. I took Pmans busted *** wheel, Tracy's spare, the two bent front wheels and tires from the 41 and the two new wheels for the 41 in yesterday at lunch. They had 4 dis-mounts and 3 remounts, and balancing to do. I asked the dude if he could do them from the backside so the paint doesn't get screwed up. He said he would see what he could do. He couldn't do it on the 41 wheels because of the damn goofy offset but the dude actually touched the wheels back up. Turns out Gloss black Krylon is a favorite for wheel shops. All this and he didn't charge me for any of it when I picked it all up. Couldn't believe it.
There's another tire store in Long Beach, I think it's called Lucas Automotive. Have any of you bought tires from them?
Yeah Rash, Hibdon's is great, even though the family sold out a few years ago, and it's owned by some corporation now. They still treat customers right. But they are only in Okieland and surrounding areas, not on the left coast. DW
I know a LOT of locals use this place. So, i'd like to keep this post to the top for a bit to say their business habits ****! Also, there's Lucas' Tire in Long Beach with the same stuff within a couple bucks either way in price so you're NOT limited to the jack***es ways of Performance Plus. Also, the deal Ryan gets from Coker for Hambers. I did NOT know of this till this post came out. Anyone know how deep a deal Hambers get from Coker?
Hey, I bo leave Lucas is just a wholesale broker, no onsite mounting. I may well be in the weeds on this one, but this was what I was told sometime ago.
As far as I know Ryan had nothing to do with my deal with Cokey. The deal went down between him and I and all I really did was ASK for a HAMB deal. Never hurts to ask any manufacturer for something "special". And just in case anyone was wondering, no cookies were involved!
Not wholesale. I just walked in off the street for my PorOWalls recently (half the price of Mooneyes by the way). Right, no onsite mounting. But listen to the first 2 posts here. Performance Plus DOES mount onsite but gives ****ED service. Cash and carry at Lucas instead and mount at a friendlier local spot that you normally deal with.
I've used both of these shops, Marginal pricing & service @ best for both. Lucas does have the 750 -16 w/w Lesters that I run on the back my roadster as well as the CQQL Ribbed Denmans That I run on the front This is the only good thing about them though. Universal Tire in PA. has the sh*t! 820-16 ribbed rear Lesters, but they go for a Premium $ Mounting Screw that, I have 2 stinkin tire machines, and access to a balancer @ the local high school auto shop. I don't no stinkin M/B. If you're a local HAMBer, come over to my house, We'll mount for drinks but we'll throw in the Carne Asada & Torts. C-ya, Kevin
I got some Coker American Cl***ics and had a problem with balance. These guys promptly replaced a questionable tire, worked hard to re balance and even tightened up my suspension to make it right. I was duly impressed and will certainly go back.
stopped going a bit ago thought the price was a little to high . been going to lucas tire since they are right down the street and have great deals . even give you half off on blems(ie ww with a couple scuffs that come right out ) lucas tire has all the same stuff and way less of a line , nice folks and they will ship to ya for a decent rate.. or come by signal hill and pick em up
There's one simple way to be sure of that...send them a letter. Years ago I had a muffler installed on my daily driver at Midas. The fit was poor and it rattled...not to mention that the spot welds blew out in the 2 mile drive back home. I took the car back and they botched the job even worse. I wrote to Midas and they had a corporate policy that mandated that anytime a customer wrote to complain that they would do whatever necessary to satisfy the customer. When I took the car in to the main service location here in San Diego the manager asked me if I would be happy if they installed a complete OEM exhaust system. I said yes and they had the job done that day.
Join the Alliance and if you aren't just totally stagnant you'll save the 50 bucks a year easy! Plus you're helping to support HAMB which is a great source of info for any hot rodder, young or old (like me), inexperienced or an old hand (like me). And one of the greatest things you can do for your fellow HAMB'ers is to let us all know about your experiences, good or bad, with people who sell/service our rides. Dave
I live down the street from there and they are a bunch of BUMS...I also have had a few bad experiences with them. They should go back to their early days of rice rockets & ******** like that.
Yeah it is. BUT it shows that HAMBers don't forget and can still get the word out on a bad vendor or product even 5 years later. (I'd like to see the computer that stores all this stuff in memory!!!!)
