Ha! My Three Sons had an episode where Kip buys a hopped up T-bucket. That was a kool one to watch. My favorite car movie is the Rodriguez film ROADRACERS. It came out in 94. It has David Arquette and Salma Hayek in it. Based in the early sixties, a remade teenage pulp movie. Arquette has a roofless 56 chevy w/ a Desoto grille. I love that car. Reverend Jake
Thunder Road!!!! LA Confidiential Chinatown/2 Jakes man Jake Giddes drives a Hudson Convertable, now thats cool! Hot Rod, just for the street race scene in the begining with a bunch of hotrods coming straight toward you flat out! Try some old 30-40s film Noir stuff as there are some great car chace scenens in some of them... Devil in A Blue Dress, cool cars, LA in the late 40s & its a kick *** movie. Watched an episode of the Green Hornet the other night on TV Land and they were chasing down a ring of car theif/insurance fraud guys. The crooks worked out of a car customizing shop with some pretty cool stuff in it including a metallic green duece roadster.
My favorite is Badlands where Martin Sheen is this relatively calm dude who in the beginning of the move through the middle rides around in some half ***ed chopped 51 Merc with some underage chick. While hes at it he torches her father kills one of his buddies andslaughters a couple of cowsand steals a Caddy from some rich guy and his deaf housekeeper. This flick made me the man Iam today!
It's about time somebody mentioned "California Kid"...!!! Others I like are..., "The Lively Set", "Choppers", "Big Wheel", "American Graffiti", "Hollywood Knights", "Blues Brothers" (Action/stunts), "Bullit", "Gran Prix", "Rocketeer" (cars and airplanes), "Indiana Jones", etc. etc....
Joe Riot mentioned "The Wild Ride". It's a horrible movie as far as movies go, but if you want to see Jack Nicholson at his youthful best, and lots and lots of jalopies, it's all good. http://imdb.com/***le/tt0054475/ Also saw someone mentioned "The Two Jakes". It's the followup to "Chinatown". It's REAL REAL good although the cars aren't the stars. I've had a difficult time grabbing a DVD copy to replace my LaserDisc of it. Looks like Amazon has it in stock again, but I just can't spend that much. If you've got NetFlix, you're in luck. That post above this one that screams "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" is right on too. Think the Love Bug written by the creator of James Bond - because that's what it is. Now who doesn't like Disney after watching this? The early 1900's racing montages at the beginning of the movie are fantastic! The original Day of the Jackal has the evil ***asin driving a vintage Alfa roadster through europe sourounded by lots and lots of miniature vintage econoboxes. More of the same in "Roman Holiday" along with lots of Audrey. Thinking of Audrey, check out the original "Sabrina" to catch her ******* heart-throb driving a fantastic Chrysler Ghia (IIRC). For the oposide side of the spectrum, super futuristic cars feature in Freejack, Judge Dredd, Total Recall, the Back to the Future trillogy and the best ones in - wait for it - Robocop. They accurately predicted the return to giant gas guzzling SUVs and huge powerful sedans. The example they give even looks like the current model Chrysler 300. Scarey. Lots of prop cars from other movies were pulled off the back lots for the BTTF movies. IIRC Barris built quite a few of them. "Gattica" goes the retro look one better by using a '60s Studebaker Avanti and Citroen roadster as futurecars. A movie that doesn't feature the car, but makes quite a few jokes about the sterotype of a greasemonkey mechanic pared with a Porsche 356 Speedster is the so-so "Doc Hollywood". OK, it is's actually bad, but the Porsche stuff is the high point. And the cars in it suuuuck, but if you haven't seen "Repo Man" enough times to memorize the repo code, you need to see it again. I will not cause damage to a car or a cars contents or by inaction... More vintage cars in France in the cult movie "A Man and a Woman". The lead is a rally driver and tests a just released Fort GT40 and drives a '65 Mustang in a cross europe rally. It's really worth a purchase and it's soft enough your gal will watch it with you. Want Mercs? Everyone remembers "Cobra" and someone already mentioned the Val Kimmer "Batman" movie. But catch "Badlands" where Emilio Estivez drives a flat black shaved and chopped looker. Brad Pit has a nice shiney Merc in "Cool World". Back to sporty cars, "The Thirteenth Floor" has an early Porsche 911 or 912 and Robert Redford drives an early Porsche 912 in "Spy Games". "Basic Instinct" has some good driving-chase scenes with a Fox body Mustang and Lotus Esprit. Do we even need to mention "Winning" with Paul Newman, "Grand Prix" with James Garner, and "Le Mans" with Steve McQueen. Everyone remembers the king of cool, James Dean driving his Merc in "Rebel Without a Cause" but did you see the '29 Roadster Pickup he drives in "Giant"? There are a few other '50s cars in there worth mentioning. Do you like those old cars? Grab "The Untouchables" with Kevin Kostner and "Oscar" with Syl Stalone. Both of them are mob movies with lots of early depression era cars. "The Shadow" and "**** Tracy" have the same cars with a slightly surrealistic twist. "Losin' It" has our heros visit Mexico in a convertible '57 Chevy. The locals have a hot rod that obviously a blinging '28 RPU that's been given the instant rat-rod treatment. Look close to see the Jag IRS under the back of it. The local federales have a '58 Chevy also. When watching, remember to scream at the top of your lungs when you...well, just watch it. If you're a fan of "Smokey and the Bandit" super chickens, look at "Detroit Rock City" to see the heros in a Volvo get one over on the disco fiends in their Trans Am. And can't get enough of Burt Reynolds but can't bear to watch another truck movie or bad "Cannonball", then "Hooper" fits the bill with it's continuous car stunts and misbehaving drivers. Nothing like p***ing beer from one car to another at 60mph. Oh, one of them is in reverse! "Buckaroo Banzi" had the distinction of just about the only movie that mentioned land speed racing (although in a truck!) untill pretty boy appeared in the fantastical piece of fiction, "Landspeed" with head-to-head jet vs. rocket car racing. "CQ" for '60s French cars. "Joe Dirt" for '60s Mopar fans. I can keep going if I think a little...
Geeez, did you have to quote the whole thing? Crybaby, heh? Someone asked for a review of Gumball Rally. Get it. It's Cobra vs. Ferrari Daytona at speed across the US. It's funny without being the cheezy mess that Cannonball turned into. Brock Yates says he's never watched it because they ripped his idea without credit, but he's missing out. The current, real life, cornball Gumball 3000 events are based on this movie, dramatic driver's meeting and all. Lots of shots of cars going really fast on real highways and as an homage to the '50s LA River racers, they even do a bit of dicing in the river c****s. The supporting cast of cross country racers add to the laughs. A van filled with 300 gallons of gas, a vintage Mercedes 300SL roadster, a street legal Stock Car that looks like a Camaro, a Hungarian racing a motorcycle (Lapchik IIRC), an all female team in a Porsche 911 Targa, and a pair of LA Cops in a fake cop car. No contrived plot or Hollywood cameos like Yates Cannonball movie. Just a simple race from NYC to LA. Oh, almost forgot the gaudy T-bucket dripping with chrome and br***. IIRC the Cobra driver calls it the ugliest thing he's seen, a jukebox on wheels. More movies? Hell yeah! More of Stalone and Caradine in "Death Race 2000". More cars in every single James Bond movie and he drives in every one except for "You Only Live Twice" but Kissy Suzuki drove the convertable Toyota GT2000 so that makes up for it. Thinking of Steve McQueen again, seems every single movie he did had good cars in it. "Thomas Crown Affair" has him cavorting on the beach in a tricked out period dune buggy. "Great Escape" has him zipping across fields on a mock-vintage motorcycle and "On Any Sunday" and it's sequel he really IS racing motorcycles. Everyone already knows about "Bullit" but catch "Junior Bonner" for a good flick with some period Cadillacs and trucks. It's the NON-Urban cowboy. And I think someone already mentioned "The Blob" with all of it's period cars and a couple rods.
Nobody mentioned "Rendevous" yet. It's an eleven minute early '70s one-take movie. The shot is taken from the grille of a '60s Ferrari (there is some debate) being driven through Paris at a VERY high rate of speed. It used to sell for $80 on VHS but has recently been released on DVD for $30. If you like it, take a look at the "Getaway in Stockholm" series for something outrageous and modern. The movie "**X" cops the GIS movie for it's opening. Shame on you Vin Diesel.
Ever seen "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner"? There's a scene where Spencer Tracy & Kate Hepburn are sitting in their car at an ice cream stand - Spence backs up the sedan without looking just as a VERY NICE Deuce roadster is cruising the parking lot. WHAM!, the Deuce gets crunched in the rear quarter. Spencer gives the guy $50 to cover repairs, then leaves. Could this be the single most horrific car scene ever put to film?
Its Been too long since Ive seen it...But The New **** TRACY.....the one with Madonna. I remember a Buncha Nice cars.
A Perfect World, I think that's the name of it. Has Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, a 59 Chevy, 57 Ford and lots of other cool cars in the background.
they sell that on dvd now. also for g***ers (70's style) is hot rod '79........."hey paintjob" what about 30's...hot rod
Hot Rod, the movie from the mid to late 70s. BAD*** G***er Willys and some pretty good Drag footage i think from Fremont.
This one's still in the theaters: The Aviator. Covers Howard Hughes' life from 1927-1947. Lots of old cars. One scene features HH in a "jalopy" '36 Chevy two-door sedan; hoodless with chromed engine getting repeatedly t-boned by his psycho-underage girlfriend in a '38 Ford convertible. It's a pretty good movie but 3 hours long, so hang on to your drink cup!
