looking for a paint booth and body man

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hbrown, Oct 24, 2010.

  1. I tell customers who ***** about price for paint and body work...you go do one first then come back and tell me the shop rates are too high. Not an easy job whether it's 1000 bucks or 20 thousand. And most of the time the people who pay the least will complain the most.

Last year I sent a nice 40 PU to one of my body shop clients, they charged him $15k to paint a very clean truck that really did not need painting. No problems with the customer paying once it was done.

I stripe for shops and individual painters. If you really want a cheepie (within reason of course) job I know a very talented guy in San Marcos who can do it and he needs the $$. PM me.

This is true. I would do it for anyone who asked, but I would not be held responsable for any bad body work and or bad prep. I make that very clear to the customer.

Also, most pepole do not understand how much work goes into a paint job. Most think that you just squirt it on and you are done. Good paint takes time!

Regardless of what you tell them, when they are at a show or cruise in and someone asks who painted the car, it's you. I've never had someone ask who did the body work.

Lots of shops over here in Lynwood,Ca that fit the bill.

  8. You can do what I did...Learn how to do it yourself....Lots of reading, lots of mistakes having to over again...Time is money so you need to decide what your time is worth...Now about the place to do the work...Tools...When I did my 56 F100 I have 2 grand just in materals (sand paper, bondo, primer, paint, reducer, hardner.

So if you look at 10 grand is cheap.

For the guy who mentioned you can buy a car or truck for 10 to 20 thousand is right, you never get back what you have in em.

One more thing. It took me a solid year to do the bodywork & paint on my truck. It came out great, have won several awards.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

  9. Buy the tools, materials, for $10,000 & learn to do it youeself like I did.

How much is your salary alone for 2-3 months? Now add in shop overhead, the cost of the booth and all the tools needed to do the job right, the cost of the paint, primer, clear, sandpaper, buffing supplies, etc, OSHA, the EPA, and all the other misc expenses no one thinks of,and its amazing that it can be done for that.

Not picking on you, but I find it amazing that people who don't mind dropping 10k on an engine balk at the price for quality paint and bodywork. I agree its a lot of money, don't get me wrong...but in the whole scheme of things, it makes more difference in how your car turns out than anything else.

Some builders won't tell you this, but if you want a nice car on a budget and don't want to build it yourself, you're far better off buying someone else's. That 25-35k car probably had 70k in it, if someone else built it.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned them, but I have always heard good things about Jeff Lily Restorations...I think they are in Austin or San Antonio area. I have no idea how much they charge, though.

Before you expoxy prime it get your ducks in a roll and find the person you want to do the work as it is said most painter's like to use there brand of products on your car . As a Example of brands some use PPG and other like DuPont if there a problem with thw product the company will not stand behind it if theres a different brand under theres . Ben there and done that and got screwed from the paint company on a couple jobs because of it ! just trying to give you a heads up ! good luck !

Well taking a vehicle apart, media blasting, finishing, painting, and re-***embly ain't a "paint job", it is a restoration, good luck on the <10K. :D

if i had a dollar for every time i've heard that.

after 20yrs of this i've had to redo people's work who had no idea how to do body work. sometimes the body filler was still wet underneath that you can s****e it off with a razor blade. or they apply filler over guide coat. filler doesn't stick to that.

i've had to tell people that i have to re-strip the whole car back down to bare metal cause prep work was not up to par.

that's why i don't really like to tell people what i do for a living. cause everyone always has a "small" dent they want fixed cheap.

I do work on the side like many people on here, and a good example of why this stuff ain't cheap, I had to buy a new compressor this morning after mine finally bit the dust. After 5 rebuilds it was wore out then the motor fried and I wasn't going to put another dime into it. I won't say what I paid for this ONE PIECE of shop equipment, but it was enough that I wont make chit off of the job I'm in the middle of and might break even off of the next one.

And thats just one small piece of the pie it takes to do this stuff succesfully, I really feel for the guys who do this day in and day out...

Most of the time I regret even taking on paint work anymore but I've got to support my hotrod habit and family somehow cause one job doesn't cut it these days!

Wow! Look at all the unsolicited advice!

Without argueing any particular point, Howard was looking for a reference directing him to a mid-level paint pro that was open to working with someone smart enough to know a $10k paint job but in the market for something less expensive.
I saw maybe three replies that were useful.

Be careful with the high and mighty replies folks. I know this fella and he isn't on his first trip around the block, he isn't a cheapskate and he has first hand experience with first rate work, materials and costs.

Let's make the HAMB useful again. Stick to the question asked.
