I have acquired a 1940 Chevy three-quarter ton pickup and I'm looking to improve it's braking and steering. Anyone know if 1940 Chevy half-ton and three-quarter ton spindles are the same? If they are, what year Chevy car brake drums can be swapped onto a 1940 Chevy pickup spindle, improving braking and giving a five bolt pattern)? And are the 1941 to 1946 Chevy car and truck steering boxes interchangeable or will I need to find one from a pickup. My thanks.
Steering boxes don't interchange. You need '49-'50 front hub/drum ***'ys to work with the '40 brakes. We usually use the better '51 up Bendix 11" truck brakes & '51-'54 p***. hub/drums.
So I need the '41 to '46 pickup steering box and column? If the six lug wheel isn't a problem do the '51 and up pickup drums and hubs bolt on the '40 spindle also? My thanks.
I have access to a '51 or '52 half-ton that suffered a cab fire, would the front and rear axles out of it go under the '40 (3/4 ton) without major surgery? Would the steering box out of a '47 to '55 work? I'll probably just swap the drums on the front but studying my options. Again my thanks.
yes. did you not read the anything on the stovebolt site? The tech section answers every one of your questions...
Untill 46? the 3/4 tons shared the same basic suspension as the 1/2 tons but a longer wheelbase and the rear springs were outside the frame where the 1/2 ton were under the frame and they both had 6 lug wheels,to get 5 lugs I think the brakes and axles from a 51 to 54 will work with some modifications for a cheap conversion. A 41-6 truck steering box will be a improvement and I do recommend it as I have one in my 37.
