I was looking at a bunch of nailhead stuff yesterday to make a package deal. In the pile were 2 transmissions, now the guy i was talking to says this is all 1964 stuff. The transmissions looked like 400 turbos but only had 5 detents when we shifted them. What are they and did they shift like a power glide? They are not dynaflows because dynaflows had a rectangular pan, these look like the pan on a 400. Would they be ok for just a driver with a feel for when it shifts? Please dont get started on a 400 rant, just want to know about the 2 speed.Thank you in advance.
seriously didn't we cover this in the other thread you started. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=523570 If they look like 400's they are ST400's, they are TH400's but 64 was a one year only valve body. The 5 detents is because you can't choose 2nd on them. Hence the one year only valave body, they're fine transmissions.
Zman, thanks for the heads up,had me confused about what they were.I guess i will have the guy i am dealing with throw them in the pile.
I ran one of the '64 ST400's in my '57 Buick behind a 425 for a few years with no real issues, I put it in without a rebuild and ran it hard, it gave up and I put in a '64 SP400, but it will get rebuilt and go in another car.
zman, I recently got a 401 with a t400 out of a "64" buick wildcat , it has a 2 prong elect connector on the side of the trans. I heard that switch pitch t 400,s first came out in "65", could this one be original, or is it a replacement??
as is the case with a lot of the manufacturers back in the day, it could be a late model year car that got the '65 trans, or someone swapped one in as a replacement. Either way the two prong connector does point to a switch pitch. The only way to be sure is with the tag on the trans and the build sheet.
