I just installed a sbc into my 72 chevy C-10, its been bored .60 over with a lunati 280 duration cam, holley street avenger 670cfm carb. the problem is when trying to start for the first time the HEI would ark fire on the top of the dizzy cap, while the motor would run, it skipped really bad. anyone kno how to fix it of has even heard of this before ? also since i swapped the sbc into an original 6cyl truck will the stock radiatior be enough to cool the beast. thanxs TJ
I'd start with a new cap and wires if you havn't already.. A small crack in the cap could create arcing..as will poor wires.. As far as cooling..i'm not sure what the capacity of the 6 cyl radiatior is, or how many 'rows' of tube's it has.. Being your motor is punched 60, and your running a 'hotter' cam than stock , it's a good idea to step up the radiator anyway..
Sounds like the dist. cap needs to be replaced. Look for arc tracing inside the cap or it could be cracked. jerry
I just put an HEI in my 72 El Camino new to me and the dist did the same thing the dist was in one of my sheds for some time and it needed a new module that we put in and tested on the bench to see if it sparked. When we installed it it was zapping all over the top of the dist. After it warmed up it all stopped. may have been moisture. But I as well as you should probably just replace the cap with a new quality one. Ed ke6bnl
thanks guys we tried a new dizzy cap and it worked, motor ran great for first reall startup. Got up to 220 real quick though, gunna get a new heavy duty radiatior in the very near future.
