My friend has an old magneto lying on a shelf in his garage. We were thinking of putting some of his old hotrod/dragster parts up on Ebay. Does anyone know if a Shiefer Magneto # 8R112L serial C261 is worth anything? He says it's for a Chevy and it worked when he took it out. He even has an old GMC blower and a tunnel-ram setup....for Chevy. Thanks
why don't you take some pics and advertise it in the HAMB cl***ified section? Let a brother get first refusal rights if it's neat stuff. dj
Like to help a fellow out. I've got a nice crisp $100 bill that could find it's way to your friends place...................just need his address. PM me with details. Frank
This truly is my friend's parts. He wanted me to find out what the parts are worth after I convinced him to sell some of the neat old racing stuff he has. Once I have gotten a solid or even ballpark idea of their value he will be more willing to talk. Thanks to everyone for the posts and private messages.
About $200/$250 as it is. Anybody buying it will have to send it out to get freshened up and that can cost around $450/$500 if it needs a coil-points -bearings-rotor etc. Send it out and get it freshened up. With a tag and receipt from Cerrillo its worth about $800
$500 for the Scheifer AS IS. Don't let these lowballers tell you otherwise. I have sold 2 used ones in the past on ebay and all of them went for $500 and above.
+1 on knowing what you have! Here is one that was advertised on The HAMB for $700 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=491255 A little history for you...Don Prudhomme put Shiefer on the map when he was willing to give them a try and be one of the first to run them in FE Dragster (Greer/Black/Prudhomme AA/FD) setups. You/your buddy has a piece of history. Might appreciate if you hold on for a while even. I may be a Ford guy, but this looks pretty interesting. ALways like cool interesting pieces like this.
just because its advertised for that much doesnt mean it will sell for that much. obviously the dude still has it, you can get a just as cool flat top mallory magneto on ebay for around 200 that works. and with the economy right now, i say sell it for a few hundred, dont listen to these dudes tryin to jack up the price itll just sit on the shelf, lets see it go to a good home where it will get used.
True ... but the last entry on the ad says "make me an offer", indicating it probably didn't sell for $700.
Possibly not, but I bet it was close. Everyone wants it for cheap, and the economy this and that...bah. What about the guy selling it who the economy has likely hit equally as hard, may need some cash for a house payment..etc. I agree with Fast67VelleN2O.
thats a pretty good cl***ified thread, 150 posts been here five years and playing the i dont know game ( is this the wrong fourm? how do i post pics? is this a rare part? ) .... looks like it worked great, congrats on the sale.
Easy...lol if parts sit, shame on them. Some are sitting on gold, just dont jump all over them because of it! A prospective buyer will pay anything for a needed item at anytime. Dont penalize the seller for asking a starting price knowing that he will probably have to lower it! +1 Amen to that Personally, I'd rather be taken to the cleaners because I paid too much for a part that had value to me, before having some snake buy a part from me cheap not knowing what I had and knowing that I could've sold it for way more - I would keep the part in most cases before it went to somebody I knew was taking advantage of me! Regardless of whether or not the guy got $700, he probably got WAY more than $100 as some of these used car salesmen offered this guy legitimately wondering what his buddy had. BTW his buddy said its still in working order & -1 on Mallory Mags...Theres a reason why they're on evil bay for that cheap...
The world is full of common run-out '60's era Vertex mags for $350 on up. A rare thing like that shouldn't be given away. If you guys let it sit for 3 decades, what's the hurry? That mag would be perfect for someone's blown nostalgia machine. You'll have no problem if it shows up in front of the right guys. -Andy
I have PMd the people on this board who were interested. If they don't respond by the weekend, he's wants to put it on Ebay with a starting price of $500. When we spun it we got a strong 3/4" or larger arc. Thanks everyone for your help.
For those who were ****ed in by the ***le of this thread only to be disappointed after finding out the magneto was not old, here is an OLD one. American Bosch DU4 Patent date 1905 Bosch mags were used heavily in cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, stationary engines and airplanes.
Well, I've been on this forum for 5 years (exactly, as of today. Hows that for coincidence?), 1246 posts, and I didn't know it was a highly sought after, high dollar item. And I'll be the great majority of members here didn't know either. Some of us don't use Chevrolet engines, or any parts ***ociated with them......
Its worth a little more than your standard vertex mag, jyst for collectabe value if nothing else. Schiefer made a good mag, the one pictured is the style commonly seen on top fuel cars. I have no idea of the value but price it reasonable and it will leave the garage. If I had any cash on hand I would be sending you a PM right now.
I didn't mean to "****" anyone in. This question that I posed to help a true Hotrodder/Drag Racing friend has brought out some of the worst in some people. I apologize for "abusing" the board. It was not intentional despite what some of you think. My friend is a 68 year old car guy who has owned altereds, modifeids, g***ers, streetrods and hotrods and as a result has some interesting top quality parts laying around. I didn't know how I could post it in cl***ifieds if I didn't know what it was worth. I took your first suggestion and offered this to the HAMB members first before putting it up ebay. Thanks to everyone who helped me.
I am still interested...Is there any way I can speak to the person that is wanting to sell this item? email me at oldracer136@hotmail.com Thanks, Dave
