Anti Freeze questions?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tiny, Oct 29, 2010.

  1. After cleaning out my grandparents house recently to get ready to rent I aquired some useful stuff. The one thing I have a question about is some old anitfreeze. My grandfather died in 89 so I know that its at least that old. Its two gallons of unused sealed antifreeze. So the question is does anitfreeze go bad should I properly dispose of it, use it, pour it down the drain? If someone can give me a fact based answer that would be great.

Ive been told a few years..I really dont see any reason for it to go bad if never contaminated..
    also..
Its bad stuff to "just pour down a drain"..its concitered a hazardous substance.
    I would use it

    found this
"What is the shelf life of Prestoneï½® Antifreeze/Coolant?
    A. If the product is still in the original sealed container then it has a shelf life of many years. If the product has been opened and has not been diluted with water then it also has a shelf life of many years."

I can't imagine it going bad by sitting in its original container. I'd use it. Not fact based, but by the logic that the only thing that deteriorates antifreeze is heat and contamination which cannot occur in a sealed plastic jug.

    Oh, here...

Damn, you beat me to it...

  5. "Just pour it down the drain" was the smart*** in me typing. Dont worry I wouldn't do that, it would dilute the oil I poured down there too much! LOL

  6. It does not go bad. Use it, just be cautious of what other type of Anti-freeze you mix it with. When the new Pink Anti-freeze came out, people were mixing it with the green and making a very thick sludge that quickly plugged your entire cooling system and destroying a lot of parts. That is not so much a problem with the new formulation, just be cautious in use.

The coolant that was in my 62 unibody had been there since atleast 77 when it was last driven and was still green, tested good and functioned well. the rad didnt even leak. I'd say use it.

  9. Its the good old fashion green stuff. I'll probably pour it into something else so I can look at it first. If it was only 10 years or so I wouldn't think much about it but I know its at least from 89 but more likely 85 or earlier as my grandfather used to buy stuff when it was a "good" deal and keep stuff in stock. My dad scored like 10 oil filters for his sbf and several gasket kits for it too.

  11. Hey I never thought about returning it! I could tell them it didn't taste right.

  12. I can't give you any fact based information other than it is a bad idea to pour it down the drain or let the dawg drink it.

But what I might do if it were mine is get one of those things with the little balls in it, I know that have a name but it alludes me at this point, and test it. if it still shows that it protects in the cold its probably a safe bet that it is still OK to use.

  13. Thanks I forgot about those testers
