i friend of mine wants to put a 1980 350 and 700r in his 1950 lincoln ,has anyone done this swap and is there motor mounts available or a kit made ? it has a 337 flathead w/automatic in it now...he wants to use the original frame...thanks guys
That should be pretty simple - there are plenty of universal motor and transmission mounts available. If you, he, or someone you know can weld it shouldn't take more than a weekend to drop it in and get it all mounted up. By the way, brace for impact: you are going to get a LOT of people ranting on and on that it is a crime against humanity and a sin against nature to put a small block Chevy into a '50 Lincoln!
I put a 351 Cleveland i my '49 Lincoln Cosmopolitan a number of years ago- The first thing I remember is that the front of my car lifted up about 6 inches with the new motor in-- That 337 flattie weighs about 900 pounds!!!! We bought one of those universal tubular motor mount bars from Speedway, then cut and modified it to work for the engine bay-- Your buddy will have plenty of room to work in there!! One note was that the 351C sat much farther back to the point that the valve covers were touching the firewall. We had to do some modifying back there...
When I put a SBC in my 49 Merc, I had to modify the crossmember for the mechanic fuelpump. I the other end I had to modify the crossmember for the transmission. When I had the tools around me, I also made "boltconnections" so I can remove the whole crossmember. It is easier to take the ****** in- and out, when you have more room.
Just use a HURST mount or a Hurst style mount. Then all you need to do is fab a ****** mount and you are home free. besides the HURST mount will makr it look like someone did it "back in the day"
It shouldn't be all that hard. I hung a 350 Buick with a turbo 350 in my 51 Merc and then replaced that with a 350 Olds and turbo 350 with simple mounts when I first put the Merc back together. You should either be able to use a universal mount or build brackets to go from the Merc Crossmember to the Chev mounts (I'd use the early ones) pretty easy. I'd put it in place and mount the trans to the crossmember (you may have do a bit of fabricating but I think it comes close to mounting up) and then level the engine and figure out the front mounting setup.
