I read somewhere it is wrong to support a 59AB by the bellhousing, and to use the exhaust bolt holes instead. What about an 8BA?
Should still use the exhaust. I made my stand adaptor and have the parts cut out to weld up two more. I forgot I had the pieces until the other night, I had intended on selling a couple.
Hanging by exhaust works fine. Hanging by bell housing works fine. (Both 59 and 8ba) I have even hung flathead Lincoln V12's by the bell housing. Many years ago a friend brought me a 59A engine that the flywheel had exploded on and wiped the bell housing off completely. I brazed a new one on and hung the block by the bell housing to re***emble it. People worry too much.
I hung one of my 59 AB engines from the bell housing, and broke out a 2" chunk of metal. After that I bought an adaptor that bolts off of the exhaust. Someone invented that adaptor for a good reason.
It's really a nicer way to hold an engine. You can get the flywheel on. Get anywhere on the engine you want to, I think, a little eaiser than with a bellhousing mount. I wish you could do that with all engines. Maybe I can send a note to me representive to p*** a law. Dear Ms. Boxer...
Seem to recall that Vern Tardel makes one similar to the old PSI side bracket. KR Wilson ones are scarce, pricey and really neat.
I made an exhaust mount head for a regular engine stand, VERY simple and rewarding project. It is also really nice and easy spin the engine around at 90 degree intervals.
I hung my 59a from the bell housing with grade eights all the way through with a nut. It didnt break but I was afraid to touch it. next time I will do it right.
In the 80s we bought an 8BA from a circle track guy, engine was never run as the VT track went to 300 cu in Ford sixes. Engine came on a rotisserie type stand, both ends supported with a tray underneath for parts. Stand appeared to be a commercial one, not a home built one. Was a convenient way to handle the motor. Only one I have ever seen.
I've always wanted to build a stand like that. Those little $39 engine stands make me nervous as Hell.
Like this? Made of 4" sch 80, strong as a garlic milkshake! Small block Chevy adapter. It was originally made just to fit the SBC, but I cut it off, welded on the square, and threaded the SBC adapter to make it removable. Now I need to make a flathead adapter. Thanks to Unclee for donating this engine stand; I added wheels, I need to cap the ends off to give it a finished look, and then paint.
this is what a KRW stand looks like.... useful site to visit if you are into KRW tools. http://krwilsontools.com/ ive got a stand with base and original casters.... i need the parts/tool tray though. its heavy as ****.
