I have been thinking about asking this for some time. Do you get more info from the Hamb or Magazines and which do you enjoy better ? This comes from just reading a thread on Outlawing HotRodding. I know exactally the articalls that he's making referance to but I find it harder and harder to read magazines since I have been on the HAMB. Any replies welcome.

two different mediums....it's like compairing apples to oranges...

they each have their spot in my life....that said I spend way more time learning/entertaining myself from the HAMB than I do my two mag scripts....

  3. Easy. Haven't bought a hot rod genre magazine in several years. On the HAMB almost every day.

Anything that comes out in the magazines...has already been seen on the HAMB months prior so it's already old news to me. I spend more time on the HAMB than I do flipping through magazines, but that doesn't stop me from buying mags. I only buy R&C, TRK, Hot Rod, HRD, and TRJ. None of the other "rod" magazines do it for me.

I have been wondering the same thing myself lately and honestly I used to spend alot of money on magazines every month. I hardly buy them anymore, its not that they arent good its just that I get way more out of the HAMB than I do the mags. I do manage to thumb through them when I see them on the rack I am just alot more picky about buying them now. So to answer your ? The HAMB!!!

I quit magazines several years ago. They were just infomercials selling parts for their advertisers.

It's so much better to actually follow a build as it goes from a pile of parts to a running and driving hotrod by a guy OR girl :D that actually get their hands dirty.

That's not the point i'm trying to bring across. It's that I enjoy the how to stuff and tech ? and answer of magazines. But today theres more and more on OT transplants and tech. Yes magazine go with the times but i like the simpler times. So thats why i'm on here.

  12. since the "tech" on the hamb can be corrected if needed or your able to see some of the behind the scenes pic's gotta go with the hamb. add up 1 month of the hamb for tech vs 1 copy of your favorite mag and you be the judge.

x 3 Maybe Ryan can start up HAMB magazine if he aint too busy :)

  14. I used to subscribe to several mags. Within the last few years, I have weeded it down to a just a couple. I can sit down with the mag, read it cover to cover, and be done with it in 1/2 hr. I do keep them for reference. I tire of all of the ads (I do understand having to pay the bills). The HAMB is an ongoing 24/7 window into all aspects of the world of traditional hot rodding..tough to compete with that.

Mostly The HAMB. I get TRJ in the mail and buy very few print magazines anymore.
The internet you can confirm if the story works through other message boards, were as print would get costly to get other views.

I'm an older guy, and have been buying car magazines most of my life. Trouble is, I can never bring myself to throw them away, I always think I can refer to the tech articles if the need arises. But, when the need does arise, there's NO WAY I'm gonna find the article in the huge pile of magazines I own. I eventually quit buying them a couple years ago, partly because of the internet and the HAMB, and partly because I just don't have room for any more!
Now, when I need a tech article, I type in a search, rather than spend all night digging through magazines, and what my internet search turns up is usually much more informative, because it contains different points of view, rather than just one which is usually the case of a magazine article. Add the fact that you can actually ask questions and receive replies, and the mags are just left in the dust.
But, I did grow up with magazines, and I really would hate to see them go.

Magazines have always done a great job of creating awarness of new products, new techniques and new ideas/trends. Even the editors will say that their tech articles are not so complete as to cover everthing you'll need to know to do the project. But they do show stuff we may not have been aware of.

Magazines are like broad "searches" - including much you may not have been looking for. With web searches you're looking for specific and narrower topics, so you miss the other stuff. How many times have you read something in the Rodders Journal that you wouldn't have ever thought to "search" on line? Then you go to the web and get "the rest of the story".

Both have a purpose and separate benefits.

I haven't had a sub to a rod magazine in years. I hate the blatant commercialism of them. Every shiny new whiz-bang product does just what it says at least as well as advertised in their tech articles. I don't care much for most of the feature cars either.

I much prefer the mindset here on the Hamb, where things actually are tested, and at times fail. I prefer the concept of using old reconditioned parts. I enjoy the builds with rolling commentary of life and all the challenges faced.

Both. Lately I've been buying a lot of old custom mags on Ebay. There's some great stuff in those old Custom Rodders from the 60s. Car Craft too.

  24. I learn and laugh alot more from the HAMB then any magazine...that being said...It's hard to go to the bathroom with a lap top on your knees hahaha:D

The HAMB puts a lot of info at my fingertips, it has a search function that allows me to find this info most of the time and when it doesn't find what I want I can ask a question.

That said, I buy and enjoy mags too. And I never read the HAMB on the doody chair.

  26. The HAMB, I like the broad spectrum of ideas and opinions on here. The humor ain't bad either. Magazines have their place in this hobby and I know the publishers have to pay the bills but the last one I picked up had more pages of advertising than useful articles.

I say I spend equal time, but when I need to look up something for find measurements or have a question-the magazine usually doesn't have the detailed answer Im looking for. The Hamb is where I go and I can usually find something. But as far as mags go the rodders journal can captivate my attention for hours. Hell, just some of the pictures will have me stairing for hours. Rod and Custom is good, Traditonal rod and Kulture is good, Hot rod and Hot Rod Deluxe are both good. Some of the other mags I find ridiculous though, like ol'skool rodz...I find that an embarassing magazine. They each have their place.
