This is the 66' Fairlane my dad bought when I was about 11 years old. He bought it off a guy who's son we free reving it without a bell housing or ****ter shield on it. Well the flywheel came loose and destroyed the firewall, driver frame rail, and also hit the hood. O yeah and I forgot also cut off half his foot. So he bought a convertible parts car and robbed all the parts he needed. In the process of replacing the destroyed stuff he tide the frames and put in new floors. This is an original GT 390 4spd. car so of course my dad being a AVID FE enthusiast he went with a 428 and a toploader. The first time to the track, I was about 13. The car ran 12.00's and lasted on the engine until I was 15. When the engine let go we built another 428 and by the time I was 16 that was all she wrote. I started racing the car through High school. The car ran 11.80's all through school. Then I decided I wanted to race at the Fun Ford Weekend at Nationaltrails. I ended blowing it up on the second Time run. Fast forward several fail small block setups, and 4 Foxbody Mustangs. This is what we have now. 428 Forged Flattops Super CJ Rods Super CJ heads ported and milled .100 .620 lift cam Edelbrock Intake Toploader 4spd.
Very cool, I'm a big fan of the mid 60s Fords and Mercs. And love the FE engines. What size tire are you running on the rear? I have a 66 Mercury Cyclone GT with 245/60s and I get some occasional rubbing when the back of the car squats.
Yes, I run the Black Mustang in FAST. I see by your signature you have a Henry J. Is it the "Full Metal Jacket" car? If so, maybe we spoke at Cecil County a few weeks ago. Neat car.
I always loved the '66-'67 Fairlanes. My cousin had '67 GT390 with a 4 speed. When he graduated high school, his dad bought him a brand new 427. With the transplant, the car ran mid 11's. He eventually became a Ford line mechanic at a dealership. He pulled the 427 and rebuilt the 390. He tried to give it to his brother but his brother wanted a car with an automatic. The Fairlane sat garage for years with an occasional run to the store. My Uncle said my cousin wanted to sell it around '78 but wanted $3K. I said it was too much (it had original 14K miles). A few years later, I asked my Uncle about the car. My cousin had sold it for $1400 (sigh).
That would have been a Prize nowadays. Sad to say we took it to the track yesterday, and ended up having a little valve to piston contact and punched holes in a couple pistons on the first p***. I really don't understand because when we clayed it we had .100 valve clearance. O well the next build will be bigger and better. Pop ups, with Dove heads.
One of my favorite cars of all time. I have owned 8 of them over the years.I have one now that my dad bought new.At one time I had a 67 Gt with a tunnel port 427/4 speed that was SS legal. But all that being said, this is kinda out of place on this particular forum. Do you ever frequent the FE forum...http://www.network54.com/Forum/74182/
LOVE the car and the fact that it has a 4 speed makes it even better. I have to ask, what do you run for a clutch?? McLoed? And what did your dad run for a clutch "back in the day"? I have always wanted to know what guys ran for a clutch back when there wasn't a lot of options.
My dad always ran Schiffer's (spelling) in the FE's. But now he runs McLoed. They are awesome and take a hell of a beating. We always run the 2800 lbs. pressure plate with the full race disc. Screw all that new air gap garbage. If its gonna break parts, may as well do it right.
Love those 66/67 Fords. Just out of HS in the early 70's I had a 66 Custom with a 427 side oiler and 4:88 Locker rear. We raced it on the local hyway a couple blocks from home. Being we had the only early reel to reel video recorder at the time we recorded one of the races. The poor quality surviving footage of that race can be seen here challenged by my friends 440 powered Roadrunner... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7HV8AGypDw
Great! L****n Ford out of N.Y ran a '67 427 at Conn. dragway's '68 heads up S/S circuit. Always liked running the Ford guys, they never whinned...
Thanx for the comments. It is put up for the winter, for the new engine build and probably a Liberty Pro Shifted big in-big out top loader. We found a Stock Cl*** that runs big body Fords with FE engines that is going to have a few races in Ohio next season. I would really like to run those races plus our regular UMTR schedule.
Back in H.S. there was a 66 GTA that was kicking *** on the street beating alot of the 442 boys who hung out on the ave. I wanted one bad till i got a ride in his 67 GT Mustang.
