hi every just want to say this is one of the best fourums on earth, keep the great work guys. Now the question, my friend just recently bought a 1950 chevy deluxe and wanted to spruce up the exhaust a bit with the least amount of money, so he went with a cherry bomb from your locally pepboys or autozone. he went with a single one and installed it welded it and finished it with 1 1/2 in pipin out the back. I got to his house and listened to the car and it must have been the most silent cherry bomb i have ever heard. i went thru the whole thing from gaskets to weld seals to the direction of the glass pack. what could be causing the exhaust not to sound like a cherry bomb is suppposed to. original 6 banger in the car. thanks guys for al the help and info.
I agree with all the above - the tailpipe needs to be larger. But, it still won't sound like much with a single pipe. That classic Chevy 6 "rap" starts with a split manifold, or Fenton headers, duals all the way out the back. 2 Cherry Bombs will practically wake up the dead, I'm running 24" Smittys and 2" pipe on mine, it's plenty loud when you get on it.
1 1/2 pipe is an issue but also make sure the open portion of the dimples inside the muffler point toward the rear of the car. That makes a major difference in the volume of sound in those mufflers.
I think the best sound comes from split manifold and 1 1/2 pipes more than one) keep the classpack or blue streak or porter as close to the motor as possible too far back you loose the rap. And yes run just one muffler on one side just my opinion what the fuck do i know? Dave Hitch BTW they get louder as the fiber glass wears out stainless packed ones last longer
If all out volume is what you were looking for... making sure you got the thing going the correct direction is true but in addition to that you got to give that thing a little while to burn out. My friend had those on a Bronco and it took a year or so then it was loud through small pipe.
I used to fill them with gear oil and put the acetlyne torch tip in end lit and get it hot running the fire through the muffler, when you get it going good turn off the acetelyne and you will just shoot fire out then soon it will be well cooked and suitable for use i sincerely beleive that a home made split sounds the best CAUTION use all applicable safety rules
Damn , a 1.5" pipe just won't do anything . I had a mini bike that had exhaust that size ! He would have been better off with straight open exhaust ! You really need to have at least a 2" exhaust to get anything from that Cherry Bomb ! make sure you do have it going on the correct direction too . Retro Jim
should have checked dumpsters at muffler shops and put in a worn out one, or better yet a split with two. also, the longer the muffler the quieter it will be.
I wanted to say the same thing so I will just quote jim, I seen this horse has been beat to chum.............
yeah,i agree with rag,let it burn out some, mine is on a flat head six with stock pipe and the longer i've had it the better it sounds.
you want it to talk to you, just go strait pipe with a big tip at the end, till he can spend money on a split system.
i put one on my merc and fired it up.......ended up cutting it off and ran a strait pipe out the back, still kind of quiet but alot better
Like everybody says....a stock inline six through a single pipe doesn't make much noise no matter what you do. You gotta split them, one straight one glass or steel pack mounted up front.
i used 2 1/4" inch single pipe on my 200 six with a porter muffler. and my car has an awesome sound. nice roar when stomped on, and a smooth tone when cruisin' bigger pipe is the key for great sound. but you need an engine that can support it. mine has 3 carbs, mild cam, and a blueprinted head
My 250 has Langdons headers and dual 2.5" straight out the back through Cherry Bombs. It was plenty loud the day the exhaust was complete and now its stupid loud.....
i had an old 235 in 52 chevy sedan that had a stock manifold with a cherry bomb, it was very quiet also, like everyone else said, gotta split that manifold to make any noise.
Back in the high school days, (early '60s) had a '50 Chevy with a single short glasspac and dump pipe that stopped at the rear axle. 2 1/4" pipe all the way and it would bark pretty well.
As the fiberglass packing gets compacted and worn it will get a bit louder. We used to pour gas in them and then burn out the packing. that made them louder right now.
Back in the day,a kid I went to high school with had a 72 Monte Carlo with a 355 in it with headers,2" dual pipes,to 2 Cherry Bombs and dual 1 7/8" tail pipes. That cars was insane loud. Like a machine gun loud.
