I think Hemi"s look awsome.........But last weekend we went to the Billetproof drags,In Lakeland florida, and my friend ran his 29 plymouth with a 392 w/a 671 blower againsted his friend's 426 blown hemi ,32 coupe they ran 9.42 at 60 mph in the 1/8 I was hopeing they would run beter. How well do they run?
I doubt it's the motor that's the biggest problem. It's really hard to say without info. on tires, suspension, etc.
just tuning will go a l-o-n-g way ! what do they have for timing, carbs? fuel systems, (fuel tank vent too)? what boost ?
Idano Craig, I'm thinking it should have run a lot better than 1 second faster than my 3,500 lb Ford with a stock SBC 350/350 on ancient bias ply tires... I ran a 10.49 right next to it.
I just want to know, how other blown hemi's run. they were the first street Hemi's that I had ever seen at the track.
like 73RR said , variables ? but i know my -non bown- 354 in the 29 , runs well enough to make balls go into my throat , and i have driven some pretty fast cars ! its all in the variables , and a big thanks out to 73RR for setting me straight when i had concerns with my "hemi" you are the shit ! didnt mean to hijack this thread , sorry . but i regress , 'variables" mopar210
How about this my old race car 59 vw bug 2109cc went 7.36 1/8mile. Like they said tires, suspension, vehicle weight ,Driver, 60ft. times. To many variables.
And to think that I sold a running boneyard, took apart '57 or so 392" hemi for $40 back in '70 or so when I was in Jr. C.. I bought it for $25 on a skid at the Boneyard I worked at that summer only because the Boss wanted $40 for it and it's separate STOCK push-button 727 Automatic on another pallet. Didn't have the extra $15 for the tranny is all... The engine/tranny was pulled from a running MoSHP Interceptor Cop Car that I figured had the small Isky cam installed in it back then like MO used to order them with. pdq67
Did they let off at half track? Miss a shift? Leave the e-brake on? Those times don't sound right for a hemi, blown or other wise....something had to be wrong.
tell your buddies they're pathetic a friends street driven (5k + miles a year) 40 willy's truck with a 6-71 blown 354 with 2x4's, pretty basic engine, no crazy port work, or over the top $$$$ parts runs high 7 second 1/8's for comparison my 34 with a non blown but healthy 389 pontiac, muncie 4 speed and 3.50 gears ran a best of 7.60 in the 1/8th on hurst slick, and there's plenty of other mildly built street cars running consist 8's at every vintage drag we have out here. if they are running 9's they've got major suspension or tunning issues
That roughly converts to 14.60's in the quarter. A bone stock 426 or even a 392 should have gone quicker than that in those light cars. Too many variables to guess the issue but tuning and/or traction may be contributing factors.
aren't the TF cars in the mid 4s at 320 or so in the 1/4 (or 1000ft) now with blown hemis? He's racing it, so it can only get better....just need to keep finding things to improve, and improve them. Getting on the strip is a great first step
I think that you may need to look into ol' "Wild Willy Borsch" and his AA/FA that was usually up on two wheels as he drove it one-handed because he had his other hand on the door.. pdq67
That's about right for idle on a blown Hemi, what's the problem? Just kidding of course. Easily a built blown 331-392 will outperform almost any other forced induction motor for a longer period of time. However it's like everything else. If you use shitty worn out parts, low boost and 7:5 pistons it's going to be a turd. Traction is typically the problem with a blown Hemi, not horsepower. I think your boys are Nancies and should send me the Chryslers for some proper adjustment and a home that'll love 'em like they want. Tim
If the car is not set up properly it will not put the power to the ground. Tires, tire pressure, fuel, tunning, altitude, all play apart a hot motor does not always equal speed.
I would like to see my friend work the bugs out and give it another shot.I'm sure their's alot more in that old Hemi.
I have the timeslip from my first time at the strip,1/8 mile also. Believe it or not,the same e.t.,9.4212 seconds but at 74.60 mph. This was with a blown 350 in a '49 chevy pick-up,about 3600 pounds. My time would have been better but I lifted. (forgot to check exactly where the finish line was, duh) I think your friends may have lifted and maybe had traction or tuning problems, whatever. The thing is they are out there runnin' em and can always get the cars sorted out and running faster. Everyone knows they have the potential to run a lot faster than they did,but I'm sure Don Garlits didn't turn 300 mph on his first run, either.
I ran my BBC powered A coupe over there that same weekend and found traction to be the limiting factor every pass.Turned an 8.1 at 93 easing out and pedaling through the tire spin.I think that hemi was more than likely having the same problem puttin it to the ground.Going back next year with a better set up out back. Its pretty aggrevating when you know you got the power but can't do anything with it.
