I bought a 50 Tudor for pieces of the body and it came with a complete drive train. I knew it was locked up, but I could smell antifreeze in the water necks, and the oil didn't look too bad on the stick. So I figured it might be worth saving. Its an EAB motor with a 3 speed, I don't know how those favor with you guys. I just hated to see another flathead go to waste. I tried soaking the cylinders with Marvel oil but it didn't work. As it turned out I pulled the heads and #'s 3 and 7 were wasted with rust (intake valves open on both) and some dip**** poured mud into them. The part that broke my heart was the other 6 were perfectly clean. Anyway I put it on a stand and pulled the pan, and found this big crack. If it was anything else I'm sure most would say toss it, but it this thing worth saving? Anybody want it? I don't have a use for it but I wanted to make sure it was good enough for someone else to use. It starts from the front of the center main web, across the pan rail, down across number three and stops at the bottom of number four.
I see you got a new wine rack or anchor for your boat . Yep , that's a big damn crack in it for sure ! Retro Jim
Yeah, I was afraid of that. There was a bunch of sludge in the lifter valley and in the bottom of the pan. The pump screen was completely clogged too. I only took the rod caps off of 3 and 7 to try to knock the pistons out, and the bearings were well into the copper. If the rest are in that "good" of shape, the crank might still take .010 to .020 to clean it up. I really don't feel like parting it out though. Being the sentimental fool I am with this kind of stuff, I'll probably leave it on the stand and eventually toss it in the dumpster after its been in my way long enough. Thanks guys!
Here's a dumb question. I was using a breaker bar on the slip yoke with the ****** in low to try to break the pistons loose. Did I cause that crack?
I think thats a freeze crack. I have had a couple flatheads that froze and had cracks along the pan rail like that.
just curious what happened to the car? couldnt you pour hard block in it and use it for racing? or something
that is very usual on flatheads we have afew flatheads V12S with the same issue, we take averything off including studs and s**** the bare block. the get the pinstons loose we clean the cylinder walls put some kano, kroil penetraiting oil .let soack and then crank it with the starter
