I've looked at this car a couple times while haunting the boneyard where it sits. Last time I was down there the wife was with me and she said "I'd like that one in candy apple red".

Right now I'm about 90% sure that if it's still there after Christmas I'm going to pick it up and fix it up for her. It's very complete, has what appears to be a 260 or 289 under the hood. Sheet metal is all really excellent except the lower rear quarter on the driver's side needs a patch.

I've never had one of these so if anybody has any tips on what to look out for it would be greatly appreciated.

There is nothing terrible to watch out for. They ,like so many old cars, have floor rust out issues, pans are available.Rust at the cowl around the outlets can be an issue,no repopped pieces yet.Trim is not reproduced so you will need to find good used replacements.Suspension and brakes are mostly used in Mustangs too so it is easy to get.Looks like a good candidate for a rebuild!Check out the 64/65 Comet thread on here,a lot of experianced people on it.You can also try,Comet Central.com , great site. Thanks, that helps a lot to know where to look for rust.

I wish I could have it ready for Christmas but probably won't have the coins to pick it up until after then. Gotta spend some money being Santa first for that precious little girl in the pics :D

Thanks!I did a search and that thread didn't come up the first time, probably operator error

It looks like this one has most all of its original trim, I'll have to look at the condition of it to see what can be reconditioned and reused. But so far as I can tell the old car doesn't look too far gone at all. I just have to build it up with enough torque to make her happy.

She said "when you build the motor,it better do something when I hit the gas or YOU can drive the SOB!!" LOL :D

Yeah, the more I look at the pics the more I realize how everything is "all there" and looking pretty good. Barring any nasty surprises, this looks like it would be a pretty easy build :)

Neat project and cool pictures. I can't put my finger on it, but they're almost eerie, as if the main subject is over focused and everything around it is less than focused? But then again I don't know a thing about photogarphy...

Like the body style, don't know how hard it is to find bumpers / grille / etc..

Not to sound like an **** hole but maybe next time some different footware for your little girl might be an option. Lots of sharp /dirty stuff in bone yards. Cute kid 8).

Yeah I'm looking into the bumper, grille and gl*** too before I decide whether to buy it. Of course, not being able to find a grille might be the perfect excuse for fabbing a custom one :D She spotted a Falcon she likes too, I'm going to take a look and see what it's like before committing to this one.

And you're right, I ought to have my *** kicked, I'm the one that helped her get dressed that morning

Hey Guitar man, that is a nice comet. I have a couple of falcons and I wish my side trim looked that nice. It looks like a nice project to start on for sure.

guitar man;gl*** is not an issue or rubber. The bumper can be redone and you may be able to straighten the grill,if not,all model 64s used the same grill.Let me know if you get it and need help tracking parts,I've developed a lot of sources in 43 years of owning my 65 Comet. ROY.

Thanks a million, you guys are really great here.

I'm going to try to go by there with a jack and tale a peek underneath to make sure it isn't rusted out badly on the bottom. If it looks good I'm going to see if he'll take a deposit to hold it until I get through being Santa and and have the coins to pick it up.

I just have to remind myself she wants a reasonably clean looking , nice driving car, not a best of show winner so I've got to fond a balance between not taking too many shortcuts or nit pickig it to death.

Definetly the first thing I noticed when I walked around it was the trim. You just don't find too many old cars with all of it there and in that good shape. :)

awesome little cars, I've got a 64 Falcon, and had another. parts for them are reasonable and plentiful now (if you can't find Comet just remember that outside of sheet metal Falcon's and Comets were what the 64/65 Mustang was built off of) Good luck and post pictures.

Hey guitarman - COOL Comet! Like everyone said, make sure to check underneath. I owned a 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente 4-door that looked okay but upon further inspection the torque boxes were previously repaired and plated, the floors had a couple of pop-rivit patches, the driver's side radiator support was rotten, there was filler in the fenders (both top and bottom) and quarters, etc. Judging by your pictures it seems pretty solid, but make sure you "look before you leap".

    Thanks!
