I betcha at Barris it was common practice to tar the inside of the body. I bet they were doing it to insure rust wouldn't come back on the gas welds, and for some sound insulation? Maybe it was part of the job at Barris's shop on all the cars they worked on, and they looked at it as something good, and were doing you a favor by doing it back then. The first bodyshop I worked for used roof tar for everything . The bossman said he had been doing it since the forties and taught me the "technique"We would heat it up a little on the woodstove to get it to flow good.:D

Rikster, I can't seem to find an image on the net and don't have a scanner to show you. But in one of my books ( Barris Kustom Techniques of the 50's Vol 4) ( Flames,Scallops,Panneling and Striping). Page 6 Introduction there is a photo of George standing at a table covered in hupcaps flake and kandy paints, The cap on the far right looks like the one you are after. Sorry I can't be more helpfull. Hope this helps.

Oh, wow, thanks so much for posting this. The Snooky Janich car is one of my three or four favorite customs. This picture may be my favorite front quarter shots ever, even though I like the car better sans pinstriping and with the rounded wheel covers: [IMG]
As a matter of fact, I've got a 47 Ford coupe and a 46 Chevy grille squirreled away, and I'm planning on using them to build a sorta' clone of the Barris/Janich car as soon as I wrap this thing up:
My Snooky car won't be as "right" as the restoration of the original, but since It's a '47, at least I'll be starting with the right bumpers :)

    @SuperFleye and @Radio King

I can't recall where I found that pic of the Snooky Janich Ford. I've got a big file on my computer full of old custom pics that I've accumulated form all over the web. I don't keep very good records of where I dig them up, though.

I've got a build thread featuring that '35 somewhere here on the HAMB, but I haven't been very faithful about keeping it up to date. I'll post a bunch more pics soon.

The search for the correct hub caps got me thinking. Will the car be restored to the version with bumper guard taillights, or will the round ones (the post-collision version) that are on now be used?

If the latter, shouldn't the Olds caps be the correct ones to use?

Maybe not as stylish but it would be more appropriate, I think.

  23. Glad to hear it Rik (first version.)

  24. Rik,
could the center be a baby moon cap on a '49-50 Merc or Lincoln wheel?
    RussB

Rik: is the wheel/cap/combo the same as the last pic in your post #229 on the GNRS special Kustoms then and now thread?

Time for a new update on the Snooky Janich 1941 Ford Restoration.

The team is working really hard to get the car ready for the GNRS in January... lot of work still needs to be done, but there is progress.. and lots of it.

The first photo shows George his grandson Alec "the Helper Mechanic" who kept Grand-pa bugging about doing something about his old Hot Rod. So he has been a big part of getting it done now.

Couple of years later, helping out with the fresh out of a 1946 Ford engine that will power the 1941 Ford... with some better looking parts and al painted of coarse...

George and Steve with the worked over engine, and a reminder when it needs to be all done...

A few more before restoration photos.... just because they are so interesting to see!

A pile of stuff that was removed... some will be reused others replaced.

The molded in 1939 Chevy taillights where removed to get the car back to its original version with the bumper guard taillights.

The removed taillights... and yes they will be saved, and displayed with the car.

Steering wheel columns that need to be mixed to make it work with the 49/50 Ford "Anniversary Wheel".

And the very rare steering wheel... which is complete and will be painted white.

Steve and George just received the first batches of parts that where repaired and chrome plated.
"Advanced Plating" in Nashville did an outstanding job on repairing and saving the die-cast or pot metal top bar of the 1946 Chevy grille.
The rest of the pieces were done by a family owned mom & pop business that's been around since 1943 (Performance Plating owned by The Kauffman family). They are in their third generation of satisfying ole car people like us and they sure went out of their way on this project.!! The parts they had to start with where pretty poor according to Steve, But the end result is flawless.

Some people have asked how much the car was chopped.

Well this is what Steve told me about this.

"To best of our knowledge and stories that we have heard,it's ( 5" ) in front and ( 7" ) in back. The stock window moldings that Geo. is holding up in the picture gives you an idea of how much was removed. We did find that the back glass that was in the car is Plexiglas and had been cut approx.an 1-1/2" We find this unusual in that always use to say that they didn't cut these, they just lay them down because of there shape ( compound curve ). He is having a new one made out of glass from a Ford Escort windshield.! The glass shop say's It has the right curves."

In the latest Rodder's Journal there is a photo on page 135 taken at a Montebello outdoor Tent show. In that amazing photo taken by Jerry Chesebrough, an now part of the Ron Kellogg Collection shows the car in what looks like primer. Perhaps this was when the new tailights where created or shortly after the incident where the trunk was crushed, and most likely the whole car needed to be repainted.
Does anybody has any more info on this 1951 car show?

    Two more photos.

The first one shows the three 1946 Chevy grilles that gave up their live to create one new grille for the car.

When George and Steve found the car it had not much interior left.
Below shows the panels that where in it at that time. But old photos of the Coupe show that the interior was done in white and a much darker material for the tuck&roll sections. Also the pattern was different that what can be seen in the photo below.
But so far no clear photos of the interior have been found showing all the details of the first version of the interior. So if anybody has any old photos of this car in their collection... please scan and share. Steve and George would love to see them.
