Olds rocket motor with centerbolt covers. Any idea on year, details? It appears to have about a 3.9" bore.
    Thanks!

The valve cover style and the carb style looks to be the last version of the 303.

I think on the " Olds Rocket thread" there should be numbers of the head and blocks to get the exact year.

    I think it's a 324. But maybe a 303. If it's a 324 I guess that makes it a '56? 303 maybe a '55?

Rich, you are right again, it shows to be a 54 324 in the chart on the Olds Rocket big thread:

I "think" the pics he posted shows head number 7?

    '53 or '54. At first I thought '53 (303), but they might be #7 heads, ie '54 (324)
Paul will chime in, he knows everything. :p

It's been such a long time since i have had an Olds. I had a '54 in '63. A kid in a '55 Merc rear ended it just after getting all the panels straight and painted. I guess it went to the crusher. I bought a new Pontiac and never looked back.

Would there be a #7 stamped on the heads somewhere?
Are there #'s on the block that can be decoded?
    Thanks

I know this motor was hot rodded in the '60's with solid lifters. Could the heads have been swapped? I hear all the heads are interchangable,303, 324, 371,394...

Sure, they could have been swapped.

The late DON_WOW posted all the block numbers somewhere on a thread. Maybe do an advanced search and look for his posts on block numbers.

I wonder why they would call it hot rodded with a 2 barrel? I suppose if they started with a 303, adding the later 1.8 ratio rockers, a solid cam, and then using the 54/55 heads with much larger intake/exhaust ports, you would see a good change in HP over a stock 303. Also, a 303 would have had the intake manifold with much smaller ports, so when switching the heads, they should have also used the 54 intake, too.

I'd pull a valve cover to see if it really does have solids. Look for adjustable rocker arms , rather than the stock non-adjustable arms.

If it does not have those adj rockers, it likely is just a stock 324. Just my 2 cents.
