I could sure use some help right about now. I can't get my engine to stay on. I converted my 6 to 12. I dropped in a new distributer, rebuilt the rochester and I can't get this thing to stay on. It fires but it won't stay on unless I keep fuel going in to carb and even then it starts up and dies. I was thinking that the timing may be off but the firing order is correct. Please help.

If putting fuel in the carb gets it to fire that really sounds like a carb problem. Right?? Being you have worked on the carb start there and pull the top and confirm the float/needle &seat are not hung up and working correctly.

Check the fuel pump output, todays gas may be eating the diaphragm.

fuel, compression, spark in time....it's gonna run....does it only run while cranking (getting juice thru starter solenoid)and then die?....only start if gas poured down carb(fuel problem)... probably need more info on the problem....

If it will only run while you are pouring gas into the carb, you are obviously not getting gas. If the timing was off, it wouldn't even run with gas going to the carb. Just as an FYI, timing can be off even when the firing order is correct. Timing is a measure of how early or late the spark arrives at a cylinder, specifically #1, in respect to top dead center.

    1. Pull the fuel line between the carb and the fuel pump.
    2. turn engine over, If gas comes out of the line during cranking your fuel pump is ok. If not make sure there is fuel in the tank and the lines goint to the pump. If there is fuel to the pump, go buy a pump, it shouldn't cost more than $30 or so. Replacement is simple, and you will be on the road in a half an hour.

If fuel is indeed coming out of the pump your problem is in the carb.

    3. As was suggested, ensure float level is set correctly. To high and it will flood (not your problem), too low and it won't get gas (possibly your problem). Also ensure all of the jets and little holes are clear, use carb cleaner and air from compressor to clean.

Carbs are pretty simple, but if you can't get it have a buddy help. I'd bet you it'll be running by tomorrow.

    Good luck,

    Adam

Put on a new fuel pump. I had the same problem with my 235 over the summer. It would run all day long if you sprayed starting fluid in the carb. The carb wasn't getting gas. Make sure you have a good fuel line with a fuel filter running from the pump to the carb.
