this is a reply to the Chinese 5W thread

not that I am opposed to repo bodies, its a good option for many people

I just wanted to show that you can have a good 5W for under 20 with a little work

I had a lot more fun learning and bringing this one back than I would just buying one already done, and I only helped with the hardest parts but learned a lot

It took almost 5 years to find the right starter body at the right price (7K)

It took another 2 years to find the right guy to do the work and teach me at the same time (got very lucky there)

There was another $2500 sent to Brookeville for patches etc.

The whole process was like financing it - took years to get it done - which makes the 20 a bit easier

now its in line behind the truck and the other (Brookeville) roadster.....

    NZ 2012 for sure

I went and found that thread that was closed for some reason??

I see your point. I had a similar and worse 5W body that I got some help with. Hell any kind of body that spends some time at a shop will end up being an investment. Mine is not a 200$ body anymore Jeffrey! :D

Wonder what the availability of repop 5 windows will do to the value of heavily rebuilt 5 Windows?? I guess it really doesn't matter.

One way to figure out your chop is to get a hold of a stock garnish molding and measure what you'd have to cut out to fit it.

I spent $5000 on my piece of **** body.....yeah.....YEAH. But it's got a lot more usable stuff then the pics imply. I'd like to see if I can have less then 10k in it when it's all said and done by searching out the deals and being patient. I'll also rely on those who are better with sheet metal then myself to show me the ropes. As of right now I have a Brookville Firewall, two new Brookville roadster quarters, and new front floor section for under $700 so my total is $5700 so far. I'll need the usual patches and such but I might channel the car so I might not have to buy one of those fancy subrails from the fellers at brookville.

keep in mind that I spent large on the bodywork so that I could learn the process from a super skilled craftsman rather than trial and error. also, my car is paint ready strait all steel - and that level costs a little more. I would have been happy with less but the help I got never does less, so I went with it.

I know a local guy that found a body in the 7 range - he was a much better searcher/buyer than me - spent near 5 with the Kennedy's and its on the road now and looks great.

my point is that I could have spent less and had something I would have been perfectly happy with, but I really wanted to work with and learn from the guy that helped me - one of the absolute best in the world. also, I'm not a very good shopper so I probably overspent a little on the body in the first place.

I totally get it and I think that you definitely did good. My goal price is more of a shot in the dark then what I really think it'll come in at. I mean don't they all come in twice as expensive as we originally thought haha!!! I think that I am fortunate to have some really good friends that are sheet metal wizards that can guide me in the right direction and such. I'm sure I'll have to have them fix some of my mistakes here and there but if I take my time and don't cut to fast then I think I might come in around my goal price or maybe half between at like $15000.

And as far as over paying for the original body, have you seen my body? I think everyone is laughing behind my back for buying that thing hahaha!!!!

I think you did great. I mean a brand new original 5w for under 22k is a great deal. You can't argue with a real piece of history and the process of bringing it back to the standard from which it started or better. You'd be way more in debt if you had to buy a body a body in similar condition with a real Ford 5w ***le ya dig?

Great work man, I'd love to see some more process shots. In fact if you could one day can you go out in the garage and shoot off like 100-200 pics of the body and the braces and everything so i can start to figure out what the hell I'm getting myself into? Hahah!!! If not no biggie!

The car looks great and that is a nice chop on it. And I'd think that guys have spent a whole lot more and ended up with a whole lot less quite often. I was just looking at a magazine thread today with a coupe body in it that was at the LA Roadsters Fathers day swap meet that had an asking price for a bare body that was the same as what you have in yours. Then the prospective buyer would have to get it to where you have yours now.
Keep us posted on the progress.

Thanks for the pictures, I have one that was channeled and the pics helped me alot. I would love to find a local craftsman to do my metal work like your guy did, awesome work! I also like the chop, any local guys that can do work like this in Ohio?

Yes, just what I was thinking, 20K for a body is WAY outta my reach, thats more like finished car territory. Guess thats why I dont have a duece five window.

  17. Not yet, but some nice folks in Washington are working on that for us, too.

(yah, I know, but it was too hard to p*** that one up!)

Car looks nice, anyhow, just goes to show that if you want anything bad enough, you can find a way to make it happen.

As most have said here, you have done well and have a great car. Also, keep in mind when it's done, that you'll know every bit about the car, having done at least some of the work yourself. You've learned a lot and have something to be proud of.
    Enjoy it

I think there are more than a few of us that would like to know that information. Surely the man in question wouldn't mind the good advertising this thread will generate.

  23. Call me crazy....I like the 5w's more than the 3's.

Back in about '97 my dad had his hands on a 5w. It was a pretty dang good body. Somebody came along and gave him an offer he couldn't refuse. Bye Bye deuce dreams. The sad thing is....if he would have held onto it till today he could have gotten triple what he sold it for then because prices now are so ****ing rediculus it isn't funny.

You're not crazy, it's different for everybody and for me I'm with you. '32 5w's look so much cooler then the 3w's. But fast froward one year to 1933 coupes and the 3w takes the cheese. But again, that's just me and it's a matter of taste.

X3, I have always liked 5-windows better too. I even prefer the '33-'34 five windows to 3 windows.
