http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRMBlCvgETo Note: This is not my yard, it belongs to a good friend of mine. It is located in Cal
I spotted this place on my way back from visiting my brother and sisters way up north. My wife even let me visit the place for a while, even though she was scared to death someone was going to come at us with a chainsaw and rottweilers.
It's the same place. I stopped in with no notice, but I was lucky that John showed up at the yard just as I was about to give up. It is probably good to call ahead and make an appointment. He could be at one of his two yards and he's easy to talk to.
purchased a 1 year only merc dizzy from him and he seemed to be really reasonable on the price. really a nice guy to speak with on the phone and probably just as nice in person.
I've been up there a couple of times and had a blast. John is a really nice guy. Got a set of doors for a pretty good price too.
Did anyone else notice, although suprisingly refreshing, that there wasn't a tri-5 Chevy in that whole lot. Don't get me wrong-I love me some tri-5 Chevs but it makes this place interesting that it's all mostly the 'unusual' stuff.
That is because you can easily sell trifive chevy cars & parts. He sold them all. You can sell ten chevys easier than one ford or dodge
John is here on the HAMB, I believe "big m" is his userID. I've done a little business with him and he is an amazingly nice person to deal with. As for "which project is next", he's restoring a '59 Sport Fury convertible over on forwardlook.net. He has several '50s Mopars and his wife has a beautiful '69 Hurst Olds. I don't want to speak for him, but I believe he does allow tours of the yard. It does sound like Heaven!
I've been there several times, John is a great guy, we have gotten a few things from him. I actually need to make a trip up there in the next few weeks to pick up some things for my wagon.
Really nice yard ! Did anyone take notice that damn near every car had NO chrome pieces left on them ! There were some really decent cars there too . I wish we had a yard like that over on the east coast . Retro Jim
i wanted to buy the kirby courier from there as i call it i know someone local has it are you a hamber if so share some info and updates ,and pics please it was a black 53 ford courier with kirby in a red ball on the sides denoting kirby vacuum sales it had a 427 in it when i looked at it 7 or 8 years ago
That is nice to see the oddball, orphan stuff out there; it's a fair assumption that all the 55-57 Chevy stuff has been picked over and horded by the fortunate few and the high rollers. That's OK because I'm getting tired of seeing red '57 Chevys at the shows and cruises. Maybe some of the younger enthusiasts will get out to Big M and set a few of these different rides loose...once again...back on the streets.
Retro Jim, I spent my first 25 years near Pittsburgh where if you found a 15 year old car available...it was considered old, so I know what your talking about. I've been in Colorado for 25 more years. The yards that are still here still have plenty of mostly rustfree tin with great trim; some are picked over, many are rather complete. The yards here have been closing..and...(yikes!)..crushing. The owners are getting old, many of the young guys fart around with tuners, plus the yard owners are being encroached by housing developement. Within an hour and a half north of Denver,Co , there are about six or seven medium size yards with some great stuff available. "Head West, Young Man" Millwinder Slim
Easily damaged/removeable stuff like trim and grilles he removes and stores. He amazed me when I went up there when a customer asked about a specific side moulding for a 50 Ford and he went to a big barrel of assorted trim and selected the exact piece he needed.
