Quick tech: moulding fenders

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by begborrowandsteel, Feb 19, 2005.

  1. this is just a little tech thing that i thought might be interesting, Moulding in the fenders was a common way back when and used to be called "sealing-in"
    so here it is:

this is the ugly seam that we are getting rid of, first using a knive cut out as much of the wether stripping as possible,
    [IMG]

We used this STEEL welding wire to fill the seam, tack it down every 12in or so.

    Then we finish welded it.

  2. Then grind, try not to go to carzy with it though (DUH)

all grinded and ready for bondo!

Have you ever read Science Fiction? Ever read Robert Heinlein? Here's what I think he would say:

"Never try to teach a pig to sing: it wastes your time and annoys the pig".

I might have missed something? I don't see him sitting at a computer playing some games or out busting up the neighbours windows and maybe he ain't doing the job just right but he's giving it a whirl and learning on the go

maybe I didn't read something he posted that might warrant them comments:confused:

Yeah, what upchuck said. Now, granted, that might not be the best way to do it..., but I bet it will work... Face it, we all aren't gods of metal, and had to start somewhere.... so, to you naysayers, what is the correct way to do this? How would YOU do it?

Thanks for taking the time do do a tech post, bbandsteel, that's what we are here for, to learn, right?

No! Assuming that the (undefined: let it stay that way) vehicle that they were working was on was worth anything the pictured work made it scrap.

Second: thetheif's profle says he is 16. Every Friday night he goes wild here with garbage.

Last Friday he wanted to chop a 46-48 Chev sedan.

He doesn't need us, he needs his momma to stay home and not go out honky-tonkin'.

Well, shit, no wonder that I find the world more irritating. Last time I was in
Texas some "niggah-hating clown" with a pickup truck could get a cheeseburger and a draft beer delivered to his truck for consumption.

Everything that you said to me is offensive, what did I say that was offensive to you?

Thank you for your message of encouragement. It really hard to maintain the Hamb level of work when gold chain chain bastards are paying you (me!) to build the tow cars (photoed Thursday afternoon) to debut in the Portland Roadster Show.

Please continue to critisize my work because some of it needs improvement...

    WTF?

Fisrt off: you have to start somewhere.
Second: making scrap, doing things inefficiently, and junking parts out is part of the learning curve. I'm having great fun junking out the roof on my mercury...
    Third: don't mess with texas...

Jesus christ you are a freaking tard. First you dumbass, There's not much room for racism in a state where us crackers are very close to being the minority. Sure there's a couple of dipshits, but for the most part it's not the friendly state for nothing.

What the hell is wrong with cheeseburgers? not enough tofu for you?

Next time i'm in oregon I'll buy you a plain piece or organically grown toast and a glass of purified non-preservative hydroponic water.

    damn hippies.

anyway back OT thanks for the tech post. don't let people discourage you with stupid comments.

Let's see, first off being 16 your learning as you go. now if it was me at 16 I would not post a tech I remember getting my first car a 66' chevelle. There was a some shit I did to that car that should have never been done and to this day I will never admit to my mistakes. So begborrowandsteel you should ask Q's and learn from here, your to young to post a tech.I'm 18 years older then you,and I'm still learning! put some more time under you belt befor you post. It's good to have young hot rodders!!!!keep it alive!!

I wasn't aware there was a minimum age to post tech. Instead of seizing the opportunity to use those barbs you've been saving, how about someone tell him how you would use a shrinker/stretcher to make a sheetmetal filler strip and how his method might lead to rust otr cracking if he tries to build the Bondo too thick? Here's a chance for discussion of a topic.

"Take shop classes in high school (my biggest failure in life, I went through life as an academic)...."pasted from one of begborrowand steals intro which are words of wisdom from LongGone.Maybe you are just jealous of begborrowandsteal as your momma would not let you play with sharp objects when you were a kid.(your also the one who had to go and bring momma in on your last post)And so what if dads helpin pay for it at least someone in this world is tryin to be a parent instead of let everyone else raise their child. Why not get off the kids ass and give him some encouragement you can make a decent livin fabricating.Hell if some of us didnt fabricate things who would do your work for you when you get to old to do it.I would also guess he has never read Robert Heinlein because he is out in the garage working on learning how to chop the top on his car. Then he can write a tech article on it so you can read it.
Now kid keep up the good work it may not be the best way to fill fender gaps but its your way and thats okay. Hell do you think Barris and Roth listened to anyone if they did they would not be the idols of everyone. And please forgive me of any typos or spelling mistakes.
    Later Shoe
P.S. There are no rules in buildin a rod, build what you like cause its what you want and not what someone else thinks you ought to have.

  18. Don't listen to these arrogant assholes. Keep working, learning, and showing what you do. I wish more young people had your attitude and willingness to work.
As for the tech,my only sugestion would be to remove the fender and the welting first, so you can prep the area better. Use some weld thru primer on the flanges then bolt it back on, then weld. After your done seal the inside really well.
Oh, one more thing, it's ground, not "grinded":D
    Keep up the good work!

Longgone, I just re-read your post. Man that's fucked up. I hope you didn't have kids.

I hope the gas tank isn't still connected to that fill neck in the picture! The follow up story could be interesting.

I don't give a shit about your work.

You seem like an ass. We don't need that here.

The HAMB has a low tollerance for arrogance. There are people here that could build you under a table without getting sweaty. So shut your pie-hole.

    "LongGone" should be...

I looked at this post 'cause I wanted to see how to mould a fender. I like that the kid had the balls to post what he was doing. Now that we're all done blowing our horns howabout somebody showing us a better way to do it.
Some of us really do want to know.

Begborrowandsteal, Don't listen to the sarcastic shite that some are spewing forth. You do what you wanna do and learn as you go, listen to advice, and above all: have fun. That's what it is all about.

When I was 16 I could barely change a tyre/tire on a bicycle, so you're light years ahead of me already.

  28. Nothing wrong with what he did, other than the sugestions I made in my earlier post. You could use easy grind wire, but that's just a time saver.

    Nope nothing at all wrong...

If you were looking for the cleanest way to do it, you would probably want to completely remove the fender.
Then clean the two mating surfaces to bare metal.
Attach the fender and make sure the allignment is perfect.
If there is a significant valley (and there really shouldn't be in most cases), then you will want to fill it with something like the welding rod shown.
    Weld as shown.

...or, what I like to do is just tack it pretty solid, seal the back seam real well with a sealer and use filler on the top. That way if you bang a fender somwhere along the line, you can still get it off fairly easily.

I got a neighbor that has a 40 tudor that wanted his fenders welded. I never got around to it. He's had the fenders off 6 times to repair dings.

  30. Maybe Ryan needs to figure out how to install a "drama filter" on the new HAMB.....jesus christ......
