We go to Oshkosh every other year. Tons of warbirds there. I got the bug listening to my grandpa tell stories about working on B-17s and B-24s. My son has the bug now. Gotta love the roar of those huge radials.

They were here this week in Montgomery, AL, left yesterday...not sure how many went out to see them, but the planes themselves are worth the show, better yet is the old veteran crew members who come out to see them, the stories they can tell!!

Great historic birds, my Dad was a mechanic on 17's and 24's. My Uncle was an officer and he would fly a 24 into Grand Island Nebraska with some other big brass and my Dad would take them pheasant hunting. I can still see them playing cards at our kitchen table and my Mom cooking and everybody having a great time. I thought it was so exciting, Dad had a 40 Ford Deluxe four door that made a great hunting rig. My uncle died flying a weather related mission off the coast of California when lightning struck his plane and he baled out at high altitude and suffocated, found him hanging in a palm tree with his chute tangled and some one had robbed him of his jewelry etc. Very sad affair, but the early fun times were great. ~Sololobo~

This is a great thread. As soon as I figure out how to load pictures on here I will do it. One of my uncles flew an A-20 over Germany in World War Two. I also have pictures from 1941 that are from an article in Colliers magazine. I was inspired so much by my uncle that I joined the Air Force as soon as I was 18, I will be back as soon as I find the pictures.
Well, I didn't find the pictures I was looking for but here are two of interest. The engine is from a KC-97 and has 28 cylinders. The KC-97 is a descendant of the B-29. I was in the Strategic Air Command and went TDY to the Far East in one of these, but it was after WWII. Other picture is a Lockheed Constellation. Both the Air Force and the Navy used these.
They were very smooth riding if you sat back by that triple rudder tail. Both of these are in the private collection of a man in the Seattle area. The Constellation is a large model once used by a travel agency. Civilian airlines used them also. I will continue looking for the other pictures.

Here are some pictures of the first Constellation. It was taken in California during World War Two. The little plane behind the Constellation is a C-45 a military version of a Beechcraft 18. There is a lot of TWA equipment in the pictures, it may have been an area where Lockheed turned over planes to customers. One of my uncles , Air Force Lt. Anthony Donnerberg is third from the left in most of the pictures. He was a laison Officer to Lockheed. You can see the Constellation was a joint Air Force-Navy project. I am amazed at how many women are in the picture. Uncle Tony died a couple of years ago so I can't ask him any questions. I think the C number of the Constellation was either C-121 or C-122. I rode as a passenger in one from Hickam AFB to Guam when I was in the A.F..

These are pictures of an A-20 flown by another of my uncles, Larry Donnerberg. He is still alive. He is the taller of the two men in the pictures. The A-20 was a predecessor of the U-2. It was a spy plane flying over Germany and taking pictures. There are two A-20's in these pictures. My uncle's was named "Starize" because it was looking down taking pictures. The planes in these pictures are un-armed, depending on speed and the skill of the pilot to get away from the Germans. Uncle Larry said he almost had a head on collision with a German spy plane coming out of a cloud after spying on us. The German plane wasn't armed either.
This is the uncle who built a 1933 Chevrolet Hot Rod before the War, the car I used to ride in when I was a little kid. At the time they weren't called Hot Rods. I was an orphan and Larry was my role model. I only wish I could have lived life as well as he has.

Have any of you seen the video of James Brooks? Do a google on Gray Eagles film by Chris Woods. It's about James Brooks plane P-51 he named February, he was a double ace in WWII. Fabulous story.

I found the May 1941 Colliers magazine. It was too big for my scanner so I had to do it black and white. Half the planes parked in the picture had British insignia, so we were helping them before we got into the War. The airplane on the cover is a B-19, the biggest American warplane built to that time. It was about twice the size of a B-17. It was probably used for research to build the B-29. It was never used in combat. The B-19 was in a Bugs Bunny cartoon made during WWII. The other picture is a B-17A.
That is all the pictues I have. The 1933 Chevrolet in my avatar is not the same one my uncle built.

I work right next to Long Beach Airport. Yesterday an F-7F Tigercat flew right past my window as he circled around to land. Don't see too many of those around.
