Fellas, I have two hinge pins that I cannot get out. The car is painted first off. I have tried using a c-clamp with a socket, hitting with a BFH and drilling. I have not found a drill bit yet that can cut thru these damn pins. Any ideas are appreciated as I have lost my mind with **** and am about to step in front of a moving semi truck and call it a day. Chris
unfortunately, you are going to have to heat the hinge and then knock out the pin. Been there, done that, ruined hinge pin removers, drill bits and busted knuckles.....heat was the answer.
First, I'm ***uming you're talking about an external type hinge like on a '40s Ford truck. I've had luck drilling from the top, starting with a small drill to make a center hole, then progressing to a larger drills until you get to a drill the same diameter as the smaller diameter of the pin. Drill down deep enough to get p*** the knurled upper part of the pin and take a drift and knock the pin down through the bottom. I've heard the pin removers work like **** and tend to bend and break.
drake's tool works fine. when/if you bend the included pins just cut off a grade 8 quater twenty and round off the ends. works the same doesn't bend as easily.
air chisel... grind the chisel down till it fits the pin size...a little pen oil and take your time ....
Heat them up red and let them cool abit so when the BFH and the punch go to work the hinges won't bend. Wet rags to minimize paint damage. I have been where your at and i feel your pain but you did give me a laugh with your first post.....good luck
Drakes tool works fine on a pin that is not frozen in, same as all of the others, it works well on unfrozen pins, it's not magical. On a painted hinge I would soak it heavy with something that will not toast your paint, there is a knurl on the top of the pin that's about 3/8" tall on most pins, that part locks it, take a good high quality bit and drill down about 3/8" to eliminate this knurls strength, progressively widen the hole until you have it weakened soak it as much as you can and then use a pin tool, if she won't go don't force her to death of tool occurs, just soak more, drilling them all the way out is a beach, you most likely will trash the hinges, be patient. It's still not easy to heat them out so exhaust all possible soaking.
I scored the paint where the pin was painted in place. Put the hinge pin remover on and applied pressure then with rag, soaked with PB Blaster. Every night after work I would check h/p remover and adjust for more pressure and soak a little more. Took several days but finally came loose-no paint damage.
Ive found on stuck pins and bolts if you take an engraving pencil and vibrate the itenm for 5-10 minutes it normally comes free for me just a suggestion
Soak pin with your favorite liquid wrench, blaster, etc., every day for 3-4 days. Tape cardboard to door under the hinge, usne pneumatic chisel with pin point on bottom of hinge pin, maybe drill small pilot hole to keep it centered. Push up on chisel against pin and pull, then release trigger a few times. Resoak and try again the dext day. Popped all the pins in the '35 that way. Don't ask why I now suggest cardboard first. RB
