I have been selling my coupe for some time now and I got an email finally of what looks like a legitimate offer. With all the scams out there, I am a bit nervous on how to go about doing this and ask for the opinions of you guys, n gals here. The letter I recieved below:

    Al,
I thought about it and think we should make the deal. I hope you support me with some little things like to find the same white/blue material for the rear seat as you have on the front seat. I'll send you a contract. I need it in Germany couse i have to pay tax for the Chevy. So please send the contract with your sign back to me. I'll need the name and the adress of your bank as well as the account number and the Swift-Code for international money transfers. I go to my bank on monday and send the money to you. At the last times i had send money to the US it arrived between 3 and 5 working days. So when you have the money send me a mail and i talk with the shipping company to pick up the Chevy. The shipping company in germany is working with Able Cargo, 1200 W. Walnut Street, Compton, CA 90220. i have looked on a map and i think it is round about 40 miles from your home. I'll work on your car and hope to built a street beauty. I send you pictures when it is ready.

    Have a nice day,

Can anyone give me some advice. contract attached seems legitimate as well with an actual address.

    Address:
    Oststr***e 24

    7417
    1 Bad Friedrichshall

    Germany

I have asked for him to paypal me instead and not even sure if that is full proof. How would you handle this? can this be a scam.? Thanks to all in advance.

    Hi Chevnut!
if i where the guy from germany i would be more nervous about being a scam..
what could possible go wrong in your end!? he will bank wire the money before you let the car go! no problem at all! make a phone call with the shipping company, and ask if they know the guy!
its right he needs to pay tax when the car arrives to europe, so therefore he needs the paperwork to be done right!
    no worries!

    Al,
You can read that message over and over again, the buyer seems legit.
Most overseas buyers know all about the scams out there, and the fear that most Americans have for dealing with overseas buyers. [ the "too hard bin" as we call it in NZ ]
Most Overseas Hot Rod buyers do more than just a business aggreement, they try and establish a friendship also [ that is quite clear in his message ]
The safest method for you is a bank transfer [ I have bought vehicles this method before ] A simple phone call too your bank manager is probably better than any advice on the internet
Paypal is expensive and can be reversed if shipping cannot be proved, use Paypal for a deposit.

I have bought a few cars from USA similar to this guy methods, I was at more risk of being scammed [ I also use american friends to help in deals ]

Get his phone number and talk to him or get him to call you [ his written English seems OK ]
a phone call is only a couple of $$$$

Over here, we need a selling contract to register the imported car,
to prove it was actually owned by the seller/***le holder... thats just paperwork.

Allways heard paypal was expensive for big money transfers, whereas international wire transfer costs us like a maximum 60 usd fee.

And the routing numbers between banks are way reliable.
I did a lot of wire transfers like that to buy parts from a a friend in LA, or even China.

    When I bought my chev from a guy in Atlanta, he wouldnt trust money transfer either;
we agreed he would lower the price 1K so I could fly from here for a couple of days, check the car and give him a bank-certified cheque in person.

Sounds good. I have sold three hot rods to buyers in Germany and the Netherlands. Wire transfer is completely safe. The guy in Germany is taking the risk. He sends the money and you have the ***le and the hot rod. Once the money hits your account, its good.

    Congrats on the sale!

Ask your bank, too. Tell them no transfers out, only transfers into your account.

  11. sold my coupe a few weeks ago to someone outside the u.s. and had buyer wire transfer the money to my bank account. once it showed up in my account the money was mine. i then sent him the necessary paperwork. tranaction went smooth and no problems.

I sold a car to a guy in Australia. I opened up an account at a different bank specifically for the transaction. It made me feel safer knowing the account was completely separate from my savings and checking account which I use to pay my bills. He sent the money, then I sent the car. It was as simple as that. I think he had a form to fill out for customs. I would do it again if need be.

  13. Yep, do it.
    Sound legit to me.
He is the one taking the risk.

Telegraphic Transfer is the only way, it is safe for both seller and buyer, totally traceable. Both banks, yours and his talk to each other, in fact if either party avoid this something is wrong.

I sold a 40 chevycoupe to a fellow in Denmark acouple of years agop. We deal with wire transfers mostly. The thing that took the longest was the transport picking up the car. The car was sold (ebay) in September, paid in full within three weeks and picked up in November of that same year. Car arrived in Denmark in January of the following year.

  17. If you call (good idea), buy a calling card from a 7-11 or such like. A lot less expensive that way.

As far as the addy goes, it shows as a legitimate house, though that could be faked.

And, is there anyone on the HAMB nearby there?? Could help with any doubts.

  18. The risk is ALL the buyers so checking his house out is not necessary I would have thought.

Again, Many Thanks to all of you..

Got my first 1K deposit thru paypal ( a mistake by the way as they took $40.00 for a fee..oh well) and will be recieving the rest thru BANK Transfer on Monday.

I did also talk with my Bank Manager and she ***ured me that Wire transfers are the safest way to transact as it is from bank to bank.

A contract was also written up for both party to sign in which I sent already. Looks legit and it looks like my coupe is Germany bound.

Back to the drawing board..excited for the new/old car <crossed fingers>

Thanks again to all of you for your replies and advice..Appreciate it..

I can only tell you if he would wire the money, it his risk. No risk at all on your side.

For other transactions it is also possible to use an escrow service.

Be sure to send the ***le with the car - he will need it to get german paperwork for the car once it is ready to register.

I live in munich/germany and miami/FL and if I can help somebody here just let me know. I shipped a lot of cars from one side to the other the last 15 years. I have good connections to reliable shipping companies.
