Hey there. I need some advice. I have a 55 mercury monterey that i am going to put a 302 and AOD in an was wondering if any of you had some insight on this. I am wondering about what oil pan and exhaust manifolds or headers to use or any other advice. Your help would be appreciated.

Why? There are still plenty of 292 (which the car came with) & 312 Y Blocks out there. They are darn good engines and your Mercury will be worth more if you stay original Plus there's, in my opinion, no performance advantage in going with the 302. JMHO.

I've got a 55 & 56. If you need help finding stuff from mild to wild for the Y block PM me I can help you with info to find what you may need.

I still have the 292 and the Merc-o-matic but they need rebuilt and i want something in there that is going to be more reliable, economical, and easy to find parts for. If I take a road trip and break down with the 302 everybody carries parts for them.

  4. I'm a fan of the y-blocks too, but nothing wrong with putting a newer engine in. More parts on hand behind the counter. I do believe you'll need a rear sump pan and corresponding oil pump to clear the front cross member. Stock exhaust manifolds should be fine. I know someone makes headers for the swap, just can't remember who. If y is an option, John Mummert has tons of stuff including an adapter to put a t-5 trans behind it. Sounds like a great project for you and your son.

No clearance problem with the front sump

  6. 302 in your Merc is Kids play. Nothing tough about it at all. The C-4 trans mount will go to stock pad but you will drill 1 new bolt hole. Pan clears, Shift rod hooks up and almost any cast manifold will work. Here is all you need to do for motor mounts. Don't buy the kit from Gearvender supply. They are ****, He's an A.H. Put your stock Oil and Temp senders in the 302 and get 3 Runts volta drops for the gauges. You should be able to get it from there. Not much else to it.

Thank you all for the info. What factory mounts are those that you started with and are all front sump pans the same? What about the dipstick and the timing cover? I have heard there is something different there. Sorry for all the questions. I am new to the Ford world.

  8. Mustang/Maveric motor mounts. Late 5.0 has the dipstick in the pan and timing cover is not drilled for dipstick. Also serpentine belt motors water pump turns in reverse to Alt. V-belt pumps.

hey man, i have a 54 ford with a 302, the ch***is are the same for the most part. the swap was real easy but the only thing i should warn you is i used headers from sanderson that are for the swap and it was a nightmare. the stock starter would not fit at all. i bought a mini starter from sumit and it still had to be modified to work, if i could go back and do it again i would use stock manifolds......my .02.................john
